Here's my new friend Lil' Vino.... Here's kind of a "corky" guy. :D







 This little guy was made to fire wine corks.  Thanks to Jim at B.N.A  Maybe this is more suited for an urban mortar. :D 

 What can I say. I'm just a sucker for shinny things. I guess I'm getting like an old crow.....

     intoodeep,    Mike and I visited Jim at Beaufort Naval Armorers in Morehead City, North Carolina in 2004.  He sure does some nice work!  Lots and lots of brass guns and some nice stainless guns too for the yachting crowd, 10 gauge signal type.  The one that really caught my eye was the one you bought.  Cutest golf ball eprovette that anyone has ever made is what we think.  They are just beautiful.  They used to be cast, now they are 100% machined, we believe.  One of the very few places in the country where you can see three full-size, make that, very LARGE Shaper machines which are actually used.  He makes a lot of precision ship parts and the shaper has been noted for it's ability to make splines and slots and keyways in shafts.  We really enjoyed our visit and if you are ever in that area, it would be a place to see.

 Thanks for the info on Jim's shop. I've never been there. If, I'm ever out that way I'll look him up.  I have spoken to Jim quite a few times as I own a few of his other products. He is a Great Guy and produces excellent quality.

What does 'wine cork' caliber measure?
It looks by the scale of the Quarter to be very close to my .69 micro-mortar.

Is it chambered? If so, approx. powder capacity?

 The bore diameter is .74. Yes, it does have a chamber. The chamber appears to be .25 in diameter and .375 deep. I have not shot it yet but, the recommended load is 5 to 6 gr. of 4F.

How tight is the cork in the bore?

My .69 would probably be much too tight for a wine cork.

 I'm sure the .69 would be to small for a wine cork. It's a snug fit in this little guy. I think you would need a #5 tapered cork stopper for yours.

Thanks to Intoodeep, I had to get a Mini Epourvette mortar, here are few pictures and a video I was able to take before the battery went dead on me. Cork went missing into the woods after my first test shot. hopefully this weekend I can provide better video.

A paper wade was used in video, I accidentally launch the cork into the wooded area along side my driveway.

Good call on cork, I would of never thought of e-bay being a resource .. I would be kind of weird ask family and friends to holding onto their corks for me..

 Those sure are neat. I searched wine corks on ebay also - corks-a-plenty for cheap!

 You could probably cut one cork into at least three pieces still heavy enough to go quite a distance. Or, make a sabot out of cork and stuff a lead ball into it.

 If legal in your area, it would be fun to experiment with small cork-based smoke and aerial report shells (firecrackers).

 Actually guys, It was Terry C. who first mentioned Ebay as an ammo source; I only had a peek over there and confirmed it ;)

 Senor Cazador - Is the shot in the pics using the recommended charge? It sure looks like quite a blast. For a second there I thought you must have ignited a leak in the line coming from that propane tank in the background.

 One thing I like about mortars is being able to watch the flight of the projectile. However, even in my 1" mortar using a lead ball with a small charge, the ball is hard to follow. With a light cork, I imagine it would be easier to see since it would slow down shortly after it left the bore.

 Might try spraying the end of a cork with WD-40 or something to see if it produces a smoke trail ;D

I have 340 corks heading my way. Not that I'd ever use that many. But, the price average came to $.055 each with shipping. Most of the others I saw average from $.08 to $.10 each with shipping.

 LOL... I was looking at several 'high dollar' cork auctions yesterday and saying to myself "Dang! 9 cents each??? I'll have to wait for some cheaper ones." Forgetting of course that I pay up to $1 per round for fancy centerfire rifle ammo, and often burn 50 - 100 rounds of it in one day at the range.

 $50 in corks and powder will probably be a lifetime supply for me. I'll probably get more fun and satisfaction from my little mortar over the years than I'll ever get out of a $500 rifle and $2000 worth of ammo to feed it (and no Leupold scope required!).

 Hey, cool... I've just prepared my statement for the Wife if I'm not home to receive the package from the mailman ;)

Gave the WD-40 smoke trailer test a try, no luck  :-\ heres the video no smoke trailer or cork!!  ::) good thing I have 97 more ;D

 Darn... I thought it would work.

 Sticking a 1/2" long piece of fuse into a hole in the back of a cork would do the trick, but then you're launching something that could possibly start a fire if you're not careful. Would be illegal in some areas too :'(

 If there are no restrictions on such things where you live and you can do it in a fire-safe area, you might try it. Probably less dangerous than shooting a firecracker cannon...

 I just measured a couple of corks I have here. I get the largest diameter on one to be .87", and the other .82". That's kinda tight for a .74" bore. I'll have to put these on the belt sander to get them to fit (or maybe use WD-40 as a lube :))

 Have you guys measured the diameter of your corks? Do you have real cork or synthetic? Did the ones you got fit in the bore okay?

 I wonder about the synthetic ones I see on ebay. They usually go for cheaper than the real cork ones since many people apparently want the real deal for artsy-crafty stuff. Maybe they're smaller ???
