Time for an update Ken....

Well as we all know, deviating from ones original plans happens more than we'd like to admit

Here it is, 2:21am Memorial Day, and I've decided to go another route. And of all places, who do I email about availability? Why SWFA(what's this world coming 2!). I never place an order from them until I get a response on the items I'm looking for, unfortunately the response is always "we don't have those at the moment" so I gladly spend my $$ elsewhere. But they have both items where as other websites do not so I'd save on shipping going this route.

I'm now looking at a Millett picatinny base for $43.00

I also inquired about the Millett 30mm tactical rings as they very much resemble the Burris Tacticals some of us have grown to love. The Milletts are about 12.00 cheaper and if they are in stock I'll go ahead and try them for the sake of comparing with the Burris.

I just saved myself 100.00 on the ring/base combo, that's going toward the new R-25 .308!

I need to get this scope and mounts, I have a farm just a few miles away that needs coyote removal. They are going after the livestock and the owner hasn't had time to kill any in a year or so and they are becoming problematic again. I can't wait to spot one and put my crosshairs on him with the 4200 cranked to 24x! I've never had a scope that zoomed to more than 16x, I'm a little excited! I want my 6500 4.5-30x!! I feel like a kid at Christmas!

I need to relax, 7am comes early. My customers want their yards cut, never a holiday in this business

ken, my Elite 4200 6-24x50 arrived, it dwarfs my other elite. Still waiting on a reply from swfa for mounts, if no reply by tonight they lose my business again. The glass seems clearer compared to the 3200, the included sunshade is excellent. This is officially the most expensive scope I've ever owned, no gold ring but just as good and half the price

I need to make a decision on mounts.....

Aaron, I called swfa today and spoke with a very nice lady there. She informed me that they had the SS20X42 in stock and they had Leupold PRW 30mm rings in stock so I placed an order for those items and they're supposed to arrive June 2nd. I'm hoping they get here a couple of days early so that I can use them this weekend. Now all I have left to buy is a bipod and a range finder and a sling and my set-up will be complete. Don't really need the range finder but I want one.

I need to work up some more loads with some different bullets and see what this rifle really likes. I was gonna buy some Hornady 162gr. A-Max bullets for it today but it said on the box 1-8" twist barrels and mine has a 1-9" so I don't think it will stabilize. I'm gonna buy some 154gr. pills and see what it does. So far with the bulk 140gr. bullets I haven't been able to get better than 1" at 100yds, but it's been really windy and I haven't found a steady rest yet so those may be contributing to the group size; at least I'm hoping that's what the problem is. I've poured a lot of money into this rifle before seeing if it was a shooter first; I just assumed it was because it's a Remington but from what I've seen so far I'm getting a little nervous. I still have a lot of load development to do so hopefully I'll find it's sweet spot soon.

You're nervous because it only does 1" groups? and from an unsteady rest? I'm sure it'll be fine. Congrats on the mounts, SWFA officially lost my business for good. 2 emails and not a reply in 6 days, other companies usually have replies back to me within a couple hours. I ordered the Burris Xtreme rings from Optics Zone and the Millett base from Midway, both arrive tomorrow so that mess is all taken care of. I could have had them yesterday but I put ill-directed faith in SWFA and got burned for doing so by waiting.

I wont be able to get to the range till next weekend, I need to sight this beast of a scope in before I hit the farm and start removing coyotes from it's premises with .308 168grain A-max....pictures will be posted

Aaron, you lucky dog! You get to go blast some yotes and you got the Burris rings!! I just canceled my order with optics zone/ tactical store for the Burris Xtreme rings yesterday because they said it would be about 10 business days till they were in stock! Oh well, the Leupolds should work well for my use. I just picked up a box of Hornady 162 gr. SST bullets from Sportsman's and I'm gonna load a few up tonight. I wish Hornady made a 154 gr. A-Max that would work in the 1-9" twist. If the SST's shoot well I may give the A-Max a try. Well I'm off to the loading bench. Oh, let's see some pics of your rig with the 4200 mounted.

Opticszone.com didn't have the Burris in? what size and height? If you wanted the 30mm Low, something is amiss because I ordered yesterday and they arrive tomorrow. That website is awesome, they are close and ship very fast, their communication is top notch. I get email replies within 30 minutes, every time...impressive!!

I despise UPS, I wish all vendors let us chose so Fedex was an option. Both the rings and base were coming from the same hub a few miles away. In the past when I was expecting different items from seperate web sites, they'd be on the same truck and arrive together. The Millett base(which I love especially for 43.00!!) came at 12:30pm, no rings accompanied it. Tracking shows they're still out for delivery. Only problem is it's almost 6pm and I have a better chance of seeing a Dinosaur after 5pm than I do seeing another damn brown truck.

So anyways, 6 days later, SWFA finally emails me and lets me know that *shocker*, none of the items are in stock lol.

Aaron, sorry to hear about that buddy!! I know how it feels. I hate when you're expecting something and the wait is driving you crazy and then you find out it's not coming. That's happened to me a lot with swfa! I did get the Leupold rings and SS20X42 scope yesterday though; that's the fastest I've ever gotten anything from them. I am very glad I didn't take the advice of the nice lady that I spoke to there though. She told me that the Super Sniper 20X would be blurry at ranges between 100 and 300 yards (where I'll do most of my shooting) but would be perfect for 1000 yard shooting. She said that with the 20X magnification that it would be really blurry and I wouldn't be able to see very well until I got out to about 500yds. Well anyway, I mounted the scope on my rifle and looked across my back yard at a deer bow target which is 15 yards and with the AO it was very clear, then I looked out my front window into the big yard across the road from me which is about 100 yards and I adjusted the AO to 100 and it was also very clear. I am having a hard time figuring out if I have my cross hairs/scope level but a trip to Sportsman's to get it properely mounted and boresighted will fix that. Oh and when I looked at the yard across the street I was able to see the grain and texture of the tree bark at 100 yards! Yep, I'm glad I didn't take her advice. I have a Harris bipod on the way from Midsouth right now, hopefully it'll get here by Friday. Aaron hopefully you can get your mounts soon and go chase some yotes.

Ken I have been kicking the idea around for months now on weather to get the SS 16 power or the 20 power. Most all Groundhogs I shoot are past 100 yards most are around 300 yards and some are way out there like 500+ yards. I was not sure I would like the 20 power for shots at a hundred or so yards. Now you got me wondering again. Maybe I would like the 20 better. Dale

You'd think that everyone at SWFA would know their product inside and out, not tell people their 20X will be blurry between 100 and 300 yds.

yeah, she was nice enough, but she shouldn't be giving people advice on things she doesn't know about. Luckily, I knew enough to know that I could just use the AO and things should be clear all the way down to 10yards. I really like the SS scope and may order another one day, but it will be the only thing I ever order from swfa again after my experiences and after hearing what happened to Aaron.

Dale, I think you will be very pleased with the 20X, you can literally aim at an individual hair with this thing. I'm used to lower powered scopes on most of my rifles that never go above 4X unless I'm at the bench and then I turn them to 7X or 9X, so this 20X scope looks like it was built for star gazing when I look through it.

You see I am the complete opposite. The past couple years I have been shooting long range with scopes with a power as high as 25. I have found when I go to the range and shoot at even 100 yards I still would crank it up to 18 or 20 power. I have a real cheap 3x9 scope on my 243 now and just can't seem to get used to such low power shooting at 100 yards. call me spoiled if you will but I am thinking maybe the 20 might be better. Dale

Ken I have one other question for you. How is the sight picture with this scope? What I mean is do you have to get your eye just right to see through it good? I have had high scopes in the past that if you did not have your eye just right you could not see through it. Thanks Dale

Dale, if I had a complaint with this scope it would be the sight picture. You have to be properly lined up with it or you can't see anything. That may not be the case at longer ranges, but at the short ranges I've looked through it it does black out if your not lined up with proper eye relief. However, I'm using it for a target set-up so I like it that way because it makes me aware if I'm not lined up properly with a good cheek weld.

Well my bipod arrived today so I took a few pics of my whole set-up. The only things left to add are a tactical bolt knob, and a Jewell trigger.

Man I hate I am so late to the party but I have a couple questions.
Aaron- ya got to delve into the your new scope as I have been looking closely into it as well. How does it compare to the VX-III or the Mark 4 if you are in a position to compare? I have been looking for a review and then some but they have been skimp...
And Ken is the B&C stock you are using full aluminum bedded?
Good thread fellas's and some nice rifles pictured here.
If I may suggest, you are lookiung for a good base, look into the Ferrel bases. Very strong and an excellent fit.

Aaron, I've already compared this Elite 4200 to my uncles tactical Mark 2 Leupold 6-18x40 and mine has just as good glass, maybe even better to my eye. I also compared with his VX-III 6.5-20x50 and to my eyes his Mark 2 actually outperformed his VX-III. I don't get all wrapped up with the bigger 50mm objective. If the model I have had a 40 or 42 available, I would have went that route, if anything to get a better cheek weld on the stock.

None of this was done at dusk but at 2 or 3 pm on a sunny day and targets, be it paper or 2 liter bottles just looked crisper thru my 4200. I had all scopes set to 18 to be fair. My Uncle said he couldn't tell a difference between any of them, but for him to say that means something. He's got 20 or more Leupolds and after seeing this Bushnell, he wants to get one of his own just to try something different.

Dale, Thanks man!!! Yeah I've been wanting a set-up like this for a long time but always ended up spending my money on something else after I saved up. I finally got exactly what I wanted.

Aaron (myarmor), thank you and welcome to the thread! The stock is a Bell & Carlson A2 Style Vertical Grip Tactical Medalist stock and it has a full length aluminum bedding block.

Aaron (sniper), the stock is a Bell & Carlson A2 Style Vertical Grip Tactical Medalist stock. I got it from stockysstocks.com, they're having a really good sale on them right now so if I would jump on it if I were you, it'll give you an excuse to buy a rifle to put it on later.

The stock that I recieved had no imperfections and my barrel and action fit perfectly without any mods at all. I have heard of some who had to grind the front action screw down a little but mine fit perfectly. I'm thinking of ordering the Badger Ordanance tactical bolt knob from Midway (they have it on sale right now) and having it installed locally. Midway also happens to have the Jewell trigger on sale right now, but it's still a little out of my price range at this time; I just bought a new bow so I'm trying to get it set-up for now and put the rifle on hold for a little while.

Hopefully this storm passes and tomorrow is a clear, wind and rain free day so I can hit the range and test some loads. I've got a ton of loads worked up ready to test as soon as the weather permits. I'm hoping the bipod will give me a more stable rest than I've been using my last couple of range visits.

Dale, yeah the solid black stock is only $199 + shipping and those guys ship quick. I had my stock 3 or 4 days after I placed my order. I'm not sure how long the sale is going to last but if I didn't have so many other projects going on right now, I would definetly buy another. You and your rifle are worthy of the kick @$$ club. Just save up and buy one piece at a time to rebuild it, and while you're saving you can think about exactly what you want.

Aaron, I checked out your thread and that is an awesome set-up!! You're right, it just wouldn't be the same if I didn't have such a good group of friends on here to share it with. Now we have to post some pics of our groups; maybe we can start another thread just for pics of groups shot with Remmy's. If weather permits I'm gonna hit the range tomorrow to sight in the new scope and test some loads. If all goes well, I'll post some pics.

Well the weather was horrible yesterday but I made it to the range today. It was still pretty windy out but it wasn't raining. I shot from the prone position using my bipod and although I could use some practice shooting from this position, it still proved to be a more stable rest than what I've been using. Below are a few photos of the best 2 loads so far. I shot a few loads I worked up with the 162 gr. Hornady SST but my rifle hates them and the groups looked more like a buckshot pattern. The 120 gr. and 140 gr. loads all shot 2" or less but the 120gr. pushed by 50 grains of BigGame, and the 140gr. pushed by 46 grains of BigGame were the best 2 loads of the day. I'm gonna do some more tweaking and fine tuning and see if I can't get them to shoot a little better, and I'm gonna try some 145 & 150 gr. bullets and see how the rifle likes them.

Well after a little load developement and testing I have found 3 loads that will shoot 5 shot groups @ 100 yards under .5"! I have loads for the 120gr. and 140gr. Nosler Ballistic tips and a load for the 130gr. Sierra Matchking. I did a little research on ballistic coeffecient and found the 130 Sierra's weren't quite as high as I thought and both Noslers were actually higher than I thought. So I'm gonna be using the 140gr. NBT for most of my loading and long range work, but I'll use the 120grs' for varminting, and the 130's will be for shorter 500 yds and less and for varmints until I run out. I'm gonna put an order in for some Norma brass and see if that improves accuracy any. Right now I'm just using bulk Remington cases and they're not real consistant but I'm managing some pretty good accuracy with them. I'll probably load up all my Rem brass for varmints and plinking and load up a stash of Norma's for competition and some long range deer sniping.
