I'm not a nut, I'm a squirrel!
« on: May 15, 2008, 06:39:29 AM »
I hunt N. Cal where the hills are steep and the ground is dry during hunting season.  For my first few years deer hunting here the squirrels would torment me!  They could run around making all the noise they wanted and the other critters didn't seem to mind.  Let me break one twig or step wrong and the whole world was looking at me.  Let that squirrel see me and up the tree he'd go yapping his mouth and slapping a branch.  I even thought of bringing my 22 revolver with CB caps to silence the little terrorists!  I finally figured if ya can't beat'um, join'um.  I bought a squirrel call.  Now if I step wrong or think the world is looking at me I just stand real still and cherp on my call a little.  One time I had five doe come out of a ravine and pass within ten feet of me.  The first three past without incident but the last two would leave me alone.  They just couldn't figure out what I was.  I slowly got my hand next to my call and chattered a little.  They looked a puzzled as they walked away as much as to say "That's the biggest squirrel I ever saw".  So now when I hunt I'm not another nut in the woods, I'm a squirrel ;D
