Did I Damage My Contender Frame?
« on: May 16, 2008, 01:28:11 AM »
I had 2 carbines disassembled at the same time and accidentally put my .45 Muzzle Loading barrel from the G-2 on my G-1 easy-open frame.  I didn't notice until I tried to close it, because it didn't work.  Now I can't cock & operate the G-1 frame even with the correct barrels.  What happened, and can I fix it myself?

I do not know why no one has replied to you. I would have thought someone ha done something like this before. Without looking at the frame I can not help much. did you look very closely at the frame internal parts to see if some thing banged up? check the mating area where the barrel lug locks up to see if there might be a burr there. if the barrel lug,9bolt0 or what ever you call it does not go to battery then it will not allow you to cock the hammer. good luck

If a barrel works on a G2 Contender, it should work on any Contender.  I would bet your butterfly is just stuck and needs a little cleaning.  Take your barrel off and do a little cleaning in the action with compressed air.  The computer air works, but usually has moisture in it.  They do make a compressed air for guns, or you can use an air compressor if you let your gun airdry very well before you reassemble.

You really don't tell us what you can do with your frame.  Barrels still fit on it?  Will they lock and unlock from the frame?  Hammer just doesn't cock?  Please give a little more detail.....

Yes and no.  The only exception is G2 muzzleloader barrels have something extra that prevents them from working with pre G-2 frames.  I have never seen one so I can't help with what may have happened, and would be interested in what you find out and how you fix it.

When inquiring about buying one of those barrels for my G1, a TC Custom Shop employee urged me not to as it was intended only for the G2 and would "damage" my G1 frame. I didn't ask what it would do though. I have since learned of (don't try this at home) some simply grinding down the superfluous round stud protruding from beneath the ML barrel lug and then fitting them to G1 frames with no trouble.

The stud hits a pivoting part at the bottom of the frame and something gets either broken or severely knocked out of place.  As far as I know, no broken parts fell out of the action.  I am sending the frame to T/C where they will repair it at no charge according to the rep. that I talked with.

The Contender trigger interlock mechanism is not tolerant of black powder fouling.
TC knows this and tried to keep the ML barrels off of the Contender frame.
