Picked up another new Remington

I picked up my new Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .22-250 yesterday.

Today I removed the metal work from stock and adjusted the trigger to a crisp 2.5 pound pull. It required much less adjustment to get it there than the .223 did the other day. I first backed the screw off 1.5 turns since it took over two full turns for the .223 and the rifle wouldn't fire. It seems they've built in a safe factor that if you back off the pull weight screw too much the rifle will not cock and fire. I turned it in a full turn and it worked so I backed it off slowly and got a 2.5 pound pull. I then resealed the screw with clear fingernail polish which really looks like what Remington is using on the new X-Mark Pro triggers.

I then attached Weaver #35M and #36M bases.

Since Midsouth was out of Burris Signature Zee rings in the tall size I had to settle for standard Zee rings to mount the scope. I sure hope no offset inserts are required to sight this one in or I'll have to switch out the rings.

I set the rings loosely on the bases and then put my lapping bar in the rings and tightened the caps snug but not fully tight. I then tightened the screws holding the rings to base and lapped the bottom half of rings.

Next up I mounted a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 mil dot scope on it. The rifle is now ready for the range. I have six boxes of Hornady ammo with 50 V-Max bullets on hand and if they are not out of stock there are ten more boxes on the way from Hornady. I'll begin case prep tomorrow and will work up some loads for it as well. I've got three brands of 40 and 50 grain bullets on hand for it. I think the 50s are what I'm gonna work with first. Hopefully by Monday I'll have it on the range to sight it in and check out the accuracy.

The last ten boxes of factory loads came today for the Model Seven Predator in .17 Fireball so I'm all set for ammo for it for now. It's a good thing too as Hornady back ordered the dies for it and the bullets also.

I don't want to sound like "sour grapes" but if you post one more time about a new rifle purchase, I'm gonna' get sick! I've bought 4 rifles this year ... why do I feel so inferior?

Seriously, you are doing good GB. My favorite so far of your new rifles has to be that 7mm-08 ... that thing is beautiful. Keep the range reports up to date ... I'm really interested in how they all shoot.

Yeah those 25th Anniversary Model Sevens are really nice looking guns. For sure it's the best looking of the guns I've picked up this year.

My little Model Seven Predator tho might be the most accurate of the bunch. Most likely on Monday I'll have them on the range again as I have decided I need to drop the POI on the .17 Fireball down a bit. After looking over the trajectory tables I've decided I don't want or need it nearly 2" high at 100 yards but more like one inch high.

I want to shoot some more groups with the SPS Varmint .223 as well and decide on a specific height at 100 yards for it and once I get a load for the SPS Varmint .22-250 worked out I need to get it sighted in and based on trajectory determine a proper height for it as well. The prairie dog shoot is getting closer and time is running out.

I promise no more new Remingtons this month even tho I sure do want that XR-100 that Richard has in his store up in Saks. If it had been a .22-250 I'd have brought it home. I thought Oz was gonna be able to find me an XR-100 in .22-250 but he wasn't able to so I had to take the SPS Varmint instead. I do still want a Predator in .204 Ruger and am likely to bring one home this year I just dunno when.

I'm thinking seriously about replacing the SPS Varmint stocks with the Hogue Over moulded stock. I have one on my Magnum Research 1017-22LR and I really really like those Hogue stocks.

Bill, never say "I promise no more new Remingtons this month" unless you mean it  Heck, the more you bring home the more reports you give us and you know how we love those!

So Bill when you adjust the trigger you only adjust one screw correct? I have not checked Nonya's thread on the trigger adjustment as of late to see if the pictures are back up yet. I am not sure wich screw that would be. Thanks Dale

I wonder how long that "No more new Remingtons this month" statement would hold up if suddenly a .257 Weatherby Anniversary showed up at the gunshop on Monday...


I'd be willing to bet GB would be posting "Picked up another new Remington" again this time next week.

I suppose there are exceptions to anything not written in stone...

Well yeah I already have the standing order in for the .257 Whby. Magnum so if/when it shows up I'm obligated to take it so that could mean I'd have to bring home another this month if it shows up. I'm also sourly tempted to go get that XR-100 even if it is in .223 Remington rather than .22-250.

Yes Dale one screw only. It's the bottom one in the front. In front there are two I have some photos of them in my post on Nonya's thread about adjusting the M700 trigger. The other screw in front is kinda recessed and almost hidden on the new X-Mark Pro triggers. The third one is on the back side of the trigger assembly. I never touch either of those other two and so far have never seen a need to.

I really do mean no more new Remingtons this month well of course unless the .257 Whby. arrives or unless I break down and get the XR-100 or unless I see something else I really like and can't live without. You know all the standard disclaimers apply as always.

Well I done it again today. 

This time it's another Remington Model Seven Predator this one chambered to the .204 Ruger rather than the .17 Fireball like the other. I told ya I wuz gonna have one of these this year and now I do. I hope it's as accurate as the Fireball.

I'm torn between another Bushnell Elite 3200 7-21 like the .17 Fireball wears or an Elite 4200 6-24 with side focus for it. I'm pretty sure it will wear one or the other.

Do you have any 4200's? If not, you'll appreciate the step up in glass quality. The 3200s are awesome but the 4200s are even better.

Oh yeah I have several.

I have LOTS of Bushnell Elite scopes, lotsa Leupolds too.

Fact is tho I REALLY like that E3200 7-21 scope. It seems to my eyes a bit better than the rest of the 3200s and much closer to the E4200s. The price of the scope is also much more than other E3200s but it really is worth it. If they'd add side focus to it I'd personally consider it the absolute perfect scope for the Model Seven Predator rifles but the it kinda sorta is anyway. It's smaller and lighter than even the 4-12 and 5-15 E3200s.

You got me curious about the 7-21 a couple months back and it's on my "must buy" list for when I purchase a varmint rifle(caliber unknown ). I can't stop buying these Elites, seems neither can you
