Wine from Root Crops
« on: May 17, 2008, 10:49:38 AM »
I have known for a long time that Wine made from Red Beets is GREAT !

It is my second favorite home-made wine.  I like Elderberry Wine and Jelly best, and I spend alot of time in the Fall making it.

What I'd like to know, is if anyone ever tried making Onion Wine.  A friend of mine, who is also a long time home-made wine maker, thinks about it too.  Neither one of us tried it yet, but making onion wine comes up once a year.  We have ourselves convinced that onion wine would probably be a good one.

I think if Onions, either regular cooking onions or sweet onions are boiled, they just may make a real good wine.

If you haven't tried Red Beet wine, it is well worth the work.

I can't figure out why we haven't tried Onion Wine yet...

No doubt that wine can be made from onions, I wonder how it would get.

I've done beet, carrot, onion, turnip wine, as well as a beet/carrot blend.
The onion has yet to "mature". Made it last fall and it is still green and nasty.
The turnip wine had little to say good for it.
The beet is good as is the carrot. My favorite is the beet/carrot blend.

I've also made pumpkin wine, watermelon wine, zucchini wine, apricot wine and fig wine. All drinkable.

I think Parsnip should be good.

Red Beets make a potent, good tasting wine.  I never thought of Carrot Wine or Beet/Carrot blend.

Did you boil the onions first?  If so, how many pounds did you use per gallon?

used 3 lbs of onions per gallon. Chopped real fine and boiled, with 4 lbs sugar. I chopped the onions with the skin on and the wine is a real nice yellow color.  Used a champagne yeast.
Not real sure it is going to be drinkable. It is quite disgusting right now.

Not hardly any taste at all. So bland that it wasn't hardly worth the effort of drinking.

Onions are known for sulfur compounds not unlike the old sulfa drugs that just might "mess up" the bugs that do the ferment. Wish it were not so, but... luck.

I'm not a wine drinker or maker but I'd like to see where this goes myself. Onions are in the garlic family and as was said both have kind of a primitive natural antibiotic property to them. Heck y'all might have found a cure for cancer or something.
