We are the laughing stock of the world
« on: May 18, 2008, 08:02:25 AM »
Oil Companies found oil in the Florida Straits (the area between Florida and Cuba), and the US decided the risk was too great to let oil wells be developed there.  A blowout would be too catastrophic.  So now China (with the help of Nigeria) is going after that oil, and America can't do anything about it.  Cuba gave out the permits.  And the whole world laughs at us.  Then there is ANWR, The rest of the world knows there is no Caribou there during the winter when drilling would have to be done, yet most Americans believe the environmentalist that it would endanger the Caribou.  Now Oil has been found off the coast of Northern Alaska, and the environmentalist are at it again, and Americans are letting them get away with it again.  There is more Polar Bears now than ever recorded, they are expanding their range, and they have been found 350 miles south of the Northern Coast inland.  As the whole world laughs.  When President Bush ask the Saudis to increase oil production, they said NO!  They know we don't have the capability to refine it anyway, it would just go to China and India.  And again the whole world would laugh.

Got this from the Fairbanks Daily News Miner today, and I left some of the comments in for your information on how some folks feel.:

Democrats introduce bill aimed at boosting polar bear protection

By R. A. Dillon

Published Sunday, May 18, 2008

WASHINGTON — Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives introduced a bill Thursday aimed at bolstering protection for the polar bear.

The Polar Bear Seas Protection Act, co-sponsored by Reps. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., and Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y., would require the Department of the Interior to designate critical habitat for polar bears and mandate improvements to oil spill clean-up technology before offshore development could proceed in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas.

The bill is designed to counter the Bush administration’s finding that there is not a direct link between oil and natural gas activity and the loss of Arctic sea ice, which the bears depend on for their survival.

Sen. John Kerry introduced a similar bill in the Senate earlier this year.

On Wednesday, Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne said he was listing the polar bear as a threatened species because of the disappearance of Arctic sea ice caused by rising temperatures.

Kempthorne said studies by the U.S. Geological Survey show that the polar bear could become an endangered species within the next 45 years.

The decision comes with a catch: Kempthorne said there was no scientific evidence connecting oil and gas activity in the Arctic with the loss of polar bear habitat, and he issued rules designed to limit potential harm to the economy as a result of the listing.

That drew howls of protest from Democrats and environmentalists, who said they would most certainly challenge Kempthorne’s assertion that there’s not a causal relationship between specific projects that result in the release of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere and the loss of critical habitat for polar bears.

“While the listing was a long overdue recognition of scientific reality, the administration included a poison pill by ruling out the one thing that would make it meaningful — an effective policy to stop global warming,” Inslee said.

The Bush administration’s decision to add the polar bear to the Endangered Species List was a “farce” meant to allow the oil industry to continue with business as usual, Hinchey said.

The bill would also direct the National Research Council to improve its polar bear research to see the potential impacts of offshore oil and gas development.

The polar bear is the first species to be listed as a result of global warming.

Democrats lead poll

Lefty blog Daily Kos is touting a new poll showing Anchorage Democrat Ethan Berkowitz with a 10 percentage point lead over Republican incumbent Don Young in the U.S. House race.

Asked who they would support if the general election was held today, 50 percent of respondents said Berkowitz, compared to 40 percent who picked Young. Berkowitz won 57 percent of the Independent vote in the poll; Young received 34 percent.

Some 83 percent of Democrats said they had a favorable opinion of Berkowitz. Fifty-four percent of Independents, who will likely decide this year’s two congressional races, had a good opinion of Berkowitz, while only 18 percent of Independents said they had a negative opinion. Twenty-eight percent of Independents said they had no opinion.

Some 38 percent of Republicans said they had a negative opinion of Berkowitz, but 40 percent said they were either undecided or had no opinion.

Some 62 percent of Republicans said they have a favorable opinion of Young, though 34 percent said they did not. Thirty-four percent of Independents said they liked Young, while 63 percent said they had a negative opinion of the incumbent.

The poll, which surveyed 600 likely voters statewide, was conducted between May 12-14, by Research 2000 at the behest of Daily Kos. The survey has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

The numbers are consistent with other recent polls.

The same poll shows Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich leading GOP warhorse Ted Stevens by 5 points. Begich would be the choice of 48 percent of those responding if the election was held today. Forty-three percent said they would vote for Stevens.

While Stevens and Begich did comparably well among voters of their own parties, some 56 percent of Independents said they would vote for Begich — more than 36 percent who said they would choose Stevens. A full 10 percent of Republicans said they were still undecided.

Nearly 30 percent of Republicans said they had no opinion of Begich, while 22 percent of Independents said the same.

Sixty-three percent of Independents said they had an unfavorable opinion of Stevens, while 32 percent said they had a favorable opinion of the 84-year-old senator. Among Republicans, 37 percent said they had an unfavorable opinion of Stevens. Sixty percent of Republicans said they had a good opinion of him.

On the presidential level, 49 percent of those polled said they would vote for Republican John McCain over Democrat Barack Obama, 42 percent.

McCain does even better against Democrat Hillary Clinton. Some 55 percent of voters said they would choose McCain, compared with 37 percent who selected Clinton.

Mistaken mountain

U.S. Senate candidate Bob Schaffer sought to show the ties he and his family have to Colorado in his first campaign ad with an image of Pikes Peak. Unfortunately, the mountain featured in the ad wasn’t Pikes Peak but Alaska’s own Mount McKinley.

Dick Wadhams, Schaffer’s campaign manager, told the Denver Post that the spot would be re-edited with Colorado peaks and would be back on the air almost immediately.

And finally ...

Don Young isn’t the only member of the House of Representatives capable of puzzling reporters with his comments on the need to allow oil and natural gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Speaking on the House floor May 8, Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert said those who oppose opening ANWR fail to take into account that caribou on the North Slope consider hot oil an aphrodisiac, The Hill newspaper recently reported.

“Oh my goodness, if we put a drilling rig out there it may destroy our caribou,” Gohmert said in mock concern. “We heard the same thing some years back, that if we put a pipeline through some of this area up north it was going to kill off the last 27 head of caribou.

“You know what happened? The pipeline went in — that oil is warm going through that pipeline and what happened is it makes the caribou amorous. Now when caribou want to go on a date, they invite each other to go over to the pipeline.”

More hysteria from the leaders. I wonder how many Polar bears have died as a result of oil companies? I’d venture a guess at none.

The biggest threat to the polar bear is the sport shooting by the natives. That is where the protection needs to begin. I have seen it and it is an indisputable fact.

Right now if anyone took the time to look at the studies or if you cornered a scientist's that conducted the studies and asked if the current population of polar bears is stable, they would have to admit that the current population is stable and that any declines recently noted in specific areas are well within normal variations based on past observations.
If you asked them about the future chance of the polar bear becoming extinct, they may say it's possible , but would also have to admit (as they did in the study) that the computer simulations that are used to predict ice melt have a wide degree of error.

They would also have to admit that the cause of the declining ice sheets may have more to do with the the wind than it has to do with a warming.

Placing the polar bear on the endangered species act will in effect put a huge drag on our ability to explore and develop new gas and oil reserves, which will only increase and lengthen the pain that everyone is currently enduring due to high cost of energy.

One thing for certain when it comes to placing the Polar bears on the endangered species act.

There will be no wide degree of error in it's negative effect on the economy and the prosperity it will bring to lawyers.

The only good bear is a dead bear. That's from the perspective of a man who has been chased by two grizzly bears. The first attack ended with me in my truck safely. The second ended with the bear full of lead. You "Save the bears", need to get a clue.

"Placing the polar bear on the endangered species act will in effect put a huge drag on our ability to explore and develop new gas and oil reserves"

That's the whole idea, of course. Then you blame the oil companies when an artificially small supply and increasing worldwide demand drive prices through the roof.

I say we need to start drilling that oil and build some new refineries. The cost of fuel in this country is killing the economy. Dale

Dale:  The question is what does your congressmen and Senators say?  Congress and the Senate are the ones stopping the construction of refineries and drilling.

Have you seen those adds from WWF, pleading for money to fund saving the Polar Bears?  They intend to use that money to stop any mining, or oil exploration nationwide.  They don't want us taking the oil out of the Tar Sands, to drill off the coast of Alaska, or anywhere.  To drill or mine anywhere, because the continued use a fossil fuels will affect the Polar Bears habitat.  The little old ladies and bleeding heart young women are killing us with all those donations.  Just check and you will find many people among your families and friends that is donating thinking they will make a differance to save Polar Bears.  Polar Bears don't need saving, there is more Polar Bears now than there ever has been.  They are moving into the mountains, and learning to hunt land animals.  They have been found as far south as Yukon Village 350 miles south of where they are supposed to be.  Groups like WWF are just using them to ruin our economy.

    Guys;
This validates what I have been saying..that there are some mush-heads that were brainwashed by hateful, Marxist instructors in high school and college..and
they bought it..hook, line and sinker..
So today they actually hate their own country and WANT to see it fail..
No problem figuring out who these traitors are, just observe who is most outspoken in prohibiting EVEN ONE of these options toward our pursuit of energy
self-sufficiency..and who is outspoken in backing these mush-heads...

I don't know that we're the laughingstock of the world as yet. I seem to have missed my latest issue of the Fairbanks News.

As I have posted elsewhere, I do believe the greenies are citing short term data.  However, I read an interesting post from a hunter in Norway in another forum that gave me thought. And I will try to pass along what he said.  It was on AR and it made a good read.

This isn't about the Polar Bear.  They have chosen the P bear as their flag ship to call attention to global warming. It isn't to keep you from killing something.  It's to save the environment so your children will have something to kill. We hunters and sportmen have bragged that we are the real caretakers of the wild places and the wild animals.  Our cropping of the animals keep the herds strong and our voluntary excise taxes provide for the care of the wild places.

If we do love the animals we pursue, then instead of calling names and whining about not being able to kill something, we should be the point men, we should be in the van to find out real answers. And solutions.  Because if the greenies are right, even kinda right, you won't have to worry about your kids killing anything.

Polar bears have been protected in America from hunting since implementation of the Marine Mammal Act in 1972, 35 years ago.  Only indigenous native people with 1/4 pure blood or more, are permitted to hunt Polar Bear anywhere in the United States.  So the argument that polar bear are being saved for future generations, by hunters, for hunting doesn't fly.  The polar bear protection is so that greenies can file frivolous lawsuits against drilling in the Chukchi Sea offshore.  The other reason is the legitimacy of government's recognition of dubious global warming.  This is the true desire of environmentalists, not polar bear protection whatsoever.

The polar bear is, can, and will adapt to changing temperatures and territorial food supply.  The bear can exist comfortably in a variety of climatic conditions.  Just go to any zoo and see the bears there.   Does the heat bother them, not really anymore than grizzly, brown or black bear under the same conditions.  The polar bear has, is and will find new food territiories in competition with grizzly bear and adapt.  This is only if the global warming trend continues.  If it doesn't, then the endangered application just prevents further exploration in the polar bear's normal range.

No, the real wackos are the ones with the mentality of "look, it's breathing, lets kill it".  As I posted, it has nothing to do with P bears.
Is killing a Polar Bear foraging in the garbage dump at Churchill a "wilderness experience"?  Is potting a Grizzly and then asking the taxidermist to see what he can do about the number spray painted on his side and the collar rubs on his neck what you want?
Guys, this goes beyond Polar Bears. This goes beyong killin' somethin'. It even goes beyond annuity checks and $4 a gallon gas for you F350 to drive to work.

Right!! Somewhere, deep underneath Wash, DC, there's a secret room, known only to the Democrats --and CNN but they are keeping it hush hush-- where they are planning the "Democratic Strategy for the Next Hundred Years".  And Item 1 is "get everybody in the cities so's we'uns can control them". Well now, here you are just plain wrong. Polar bears have a very specialized adaptation to the cold. Zoos must provide specially cooled swimming pools (55F) for them or they will overheat.
Did you know polar bear skin is black and the fur is translucent?

Most people would find it absurd to say that the fur color would be anything except white. In truth, that fur you are seeing is actually clear!  The fur just reflects all colors in the sunlight and looks white.

The fur traps infrared heat and keeps the bear at a temperature of 98 degrees Fahrenheit(when the animal is at rest). The black skin is an adaption that allows for the maximum warming to the skin when exposed to sunlight. It is interesting to note that Polar bears are invisible to infra-red, due to the furs high absorption.( Naturally, this was of some interest to the military)

It was also discovered that many polar bears found in various zoos all over the continent were starting to turn a shade of green! Scientists found out that algae was the problem. The thing is, the algae was not on the outside of the polar bear hair, but on the inside! The reason for this supposedly came from pond water that surrounded the bears.

yea, Polar bears are cool. I say save as many as you can. Sad to say, but I think everything gotta go sometime. Just try not to make it our fault.

Naturally, a guy such as Deltecs, that lives in Alaska..and probably has chats with hunters, guides and conservation folks regularly, would not be as well informed
     as  someone from the "outside"..LOL
Best evidence is that the bears live through both arctic winters AND summers, Samoyed dogs and sled dogs from the far north have adapted to southern climes
   just fine.
In any case, as Deltecs said..the simple truth is  the "hate America, environuts" are just using the polar bear as a "straw man" to prevent us from achieving any real
energy independence. The environuts try to tell us that polar bears could not possibly exist if a single pipeline or electric line were to run through a couple million
acres of the north slope ! ...Pure, unadulterated..BS
Folks living in  Churchill, Manitoba.. for instance are just about driven out of their town by polar bears ! A polar bear is only a bear after all..have you seen how well the bears have
adapted to Yellowstone park, the Smoky Mountains Nat Forest ..and almost every other park of any size ?
Canada is our single largest petroleum supplier, and liberal as they are..they have more common sense than OUR liberals.. Canadians are drilling offshore and in arctic
  areas...DUH !
Folks, don't be taken in by the "crisis" crowd..quit listening to what they "say" and watch closer what they "do".. This same gang of screaming Mimis have not
given up their mansions, limos, SUVs and personal jets !...Which puts the lie to what they are saying !

Which of you guys here that believe these nuts have "sworn off" of planes, trains and automobiles ?

Chart shows how countries that are selling us oil..are drilling offshore while the Dem/ecofreaks forbid it to us !..DUH again !
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

Just a few minutes ago Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) was interviewed by Niel Cavuto. Cardin was bellyaching about the usual complaints concerning energy..
he claimed we must have a comprehensive program toward "energy independence"..and went on to curse the oil companies...
Cavuto then hit him with the irresponsibility of Congress..telling him simply, that we have known since the 70s that OPEC was going to hold us hostage
as much as possible. Cardin blubbered on about alternative fuels etc..whereupon Cavuto hit him head on, saying you guys in congress have had since the 70s
to correct the problem.."but you sat on your duffs, and didn't do a thing about exploring alternatives, renewables (vegetable etc) while  opening up for off-
shore drilling and opening the north slop"
You should have heard the phony "spin"...LOL..

This is why the rest of the world is laughing at us.  This and the fact congress won't let oil drilling in the Florida Straits, so China is financing Nigeria to drill there with Cuba's blessing and permits.  Then China gets the oil, that we won't drill for.  And we are tearing down dams built for Hydro Electric power to and not replacing them.  We are still refusing to build any Nuclear power plants to free us of fossil fuel dependence.  Now is that STUPID or what?

This Polar Bear thing is just the tip of the Ice Burg.  This one listing will permit all types of litigation that will shut down things you haven't even imagined yet.  Any thing that runs on carbon based fuels and emits green house gases.  That means Gas and Coal fired power plants, Steel industry, Cars, Buses, Trains, Ships, all use Carbon based fuel.  No power what is your company going to do?  How about your job?  Under the coming litigation's is your position safe?  Will your company survive?  and we are letting a small minority do this to us while using our own laws to shut us down.  No wonder the rest of the world is laughing.

As for the Polar Bears, DNA testing has proven they are adapted from the Grizzly/Brown Bear.  They branched off and adapted to a life on the ice.  Scientist say they are highly adaptable creatures and can get along just fine on land.  They will adapt to hunting Caribou, Musk-Ox, on land then seals on the winter ice.  Plus there is more Polar Bears now than ever in recorded history of wildlife.  The bears are not endangered, their habitat is changing and many feel the Polar Bears will adapt.  But this is being used by groups that want to shut down any mining, drilling for oil, or industry that uses carbon based fuels.  Yes any industry that takes energy to operate will be shut down if they have their way.

Oh Yes, it is making the guys that push this agenda rich.  Look at Al Gore, prior to Global Warming bandwagon his net worth was 1 Million.  Today he is worth more than 5 million.  Just like all the donations sent in to save the Polar Bears, and Save The Wolves, is making the top persons in those groups wealthy.  They are paid a healthy salary to keep the money coming in.

Oh and one other thing.  Every one is screaming about the high prices of gasoline and blaming those evil oil companies.  It's not their fault, blame the Americian people.  We have not built a refinery in over 35 years.  While we have shut down 30%  of our refineries in that time.  West Coast (California) refineries gone.  Even if the oil producers raised production we don't have the capability to refine any more.  It is not so much that there is a shortage of oil, we can't refine any more.  All our refineries are working at max production limits now.  And where are all those refineries located?  On the storm prone Gulf Of Mexico coast.  What's going to happen when the next RITA comes along?

Yea I have to say that has been on my mind. If we get a major hurricane this year and they have to shut down production for a week or two we are all screwed then. I bet if that were to happen we could see close to $6.00 a gallon. Not a pleasant thought. Dale

Right on sourdough;
Most of the blame goes to the econuts and their allies in congress. We could have had a comprehensive energy plan easily by now..but a certain percentage of
the elected reps in the house and senate are beholden to the econuts for election $$$$.
It's not oil $$ so much as campaign $$$ that has prevented us from having a comprehensive energy program..including research on new energy and drilling where
we can to find new sources of oil.

The same whiners bellyached about how the caribou would vanish with the advent of the trans-Alaska pipeline ! The caribou are thriving better now than they
ever have..but some thick-skulls have not caught on yet !

Below, see where China is drilling in our backyard..that fuels the Chinese industries that are killing our economy ! Since drilling is already going on by many nations
in the gulf..the obvious reason that some politicians deny our industry the right to drill..is that those politicians are part of the "hate America" crowd.. no other
   reason fits !

Exactly how will drilling in any of the places mentioned affect the price of gas at the pump?  You do realize that all the oil we'd get goes to the world market, don't you?  Heck, we could drill all those places and if OPEC decides to cut production 10%, gas prices would still go up!  So, what's the point?!!  Maybe, we should look at Venezuela and their nationalizing of their oil industry....  I do believe they are paying $ .15/ gallon....ya, sociializm sounds pretty evil!

Ironglow:  Thanks for that map.  Take a good look at it folks.  That is the reason we are being laughed at by the rest of the world.  Congress won't let us drill for it, but they can't stop China from drilling in what everyone sees as our oil, since it is so close to the US.  We're too stupid to drill for it, so we let someone from the opposite side of the world come and take it right from under our noses.

There should be riots in the streets because some "hate America" politicians want to give the oil that is rightfully ours..to our potential enemies and our present
   industrial competitors !
   It seems however, that many people are either lulled to sleep, or gluttons for punishment ! In any case I can see why there is an "independence for Alaska" movement;
too many greedy politicians want to treat Alaska like an ugly stepchild, and Alaskans don't like it !    ...Can't say as I blame them a bit !...

Lets just hope there is no blood shed when these riots happen.  Better stockpile on ammunition. People need to start rising up, and don't shed blood in the procees before its to late. If  the trucker decide to go on strike again, they need to go after  the dummies in congress, not  Bush, or the oil companies.

The democrats want to ruin the economy and make it too expensive for you to drive so you must move into the city were you will be more easily controlled in a socialist society.

I hadn't thought of that before, but it makes sense.  It is a control issue.  I believe that most Democrat support comes from the cities.

HUH? The Republicans haven't done anymore to help the situation than the Democrats. When they controlled the house, and the senate, they didn't address the problem then either. The whole damn bunch needs to be strung up. Democrats and Republicans.
Of the known world oil deposits in the trillion barrel category, the United States possesses 43% of that known oil, much of which is in the corners region of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and what ? Arizona? This was on the news JUST THIS MORNING.
