Can this be repaired
« on: May 18, 2008, 03:12:05 PM »
I bought a new Remington M700 Stainless rifle. While installing the front scope base , the screw snapped off. Not so bad you would think . But I got impatient and tried to get it out myself. Looks real bad now. I drilled it out , filled it with epoxy and put the screw in it. I went ahead and put the other screw in and mounted the rear base.

I have shot this rifle several time over the last 3 years and the scope base has never been a problem . The problem is, I just can't bring myself to sell /trade this rifle off to some unsuspecting person.

Can the hole be repaired by a competent gunsmith?

I'd probably point out the flaw and price that in.  As long as the person buying the firearm knows the condition and accepts the price then what's the problem?

Would tapping the hole oversize get you back into good steel?  Many times people want the oversize scope mount screws anyhow, for strength.  If the hole is bigger than that, would a one piece base help?  Or, have an oversize screw installed and silver soldered in place, and have that drilled and tapped.  None are perfect answers, all are better than epoxy, which isn't really so bad it self.
