Chesapeake Bay fishing
« on: May 19, 2008, 04:27:52 PM »
I will be spending the first week in August at a cabin on the Mid/lower Chesapeake Bay area.  I am probably going to be landlocked except for a canoe that is at the cabin.  I know very little about saltwater fishing and need some help.

What types of fish should be in the area in early August?
What types of bait?
Any other tips that may be helpful?

August is not the ideal inshore fishing time for the bay, but you should do OK on flounder, bluefish, and bottom fish like croakers. Some gray trout/speckled trout might still be around too. I'd rig up with bottom rigs with just enough weight to hold bottom, flounder rigs, and throw some grubs around marshes/deep sloughs. Green, white, and red are the good colors. Use fresh shrimp or squid on your bottom rigs, and SMALL hooks. If you pass a bait shop on the way down, stop in and buy a couple of things and ask what's happening. Most are glad to pass information.
Flounder like to move up and down bars with the tides, so if you have a sand bar nearby work it hard. On the fluke rigs I like to use live minnows. If you have a minnow trap bring it with you and put some shrimp in it as bait, throw it up against a marshy spot and you'll get baited up quick.
Make sure you bring a length of rope and an anchor of sorts to keep you in a good spot....don't need that much weight in a canoe (I use 1/2 a cinder block in mine).
I could go on for DAYS!
Best advice of all, take a kid with you! Fun for both, and the fishing karma seems to favor the inclusion of young 'uns!
Hope this helps!
