Whisper

Anyone have an opinion about the Gamo Whisper?  It might be what I need for squirrels in an area where a .22 rimfire might be too loud.

what range and what accuracy do you require ? what is your price range.?
I think it would be fine if you are getting close... I have read reports of others likeing them fine for a starter gun or just a budget entry level gun for back yard shooting or basement shooting. I would buy a pump up pneumatic like the sheridan or one of the other makes, no recoil, good accuracy and power... hard to beat unless you are going to shoot a whole lot and would get tired pumping,,, i never did but some dislike the pumping.

I already have a Benjamin pump up, but was thinking about something quieter for this area.

Although I have the Shadow, (same hardware) I'm happy with the performance. Get less than 3/4 groups at 25 yards using Superdome pellets.
Easily dispatch rabbits with an eye hit. ;)

I have the .177 GAMO Whisper and like it a lot.  I get ¾" to 1" groups with it at 25 yards.  I use primarily Crosman Premier 7.9gr Hollow Point pellets.  I have also used the GAMO 9.6gr Rocket Ballistic Tip pellets with good results too.

The whisper shoots 1200 FPS with their pellets and 1000 FPS with lead pellets that's pretty fast.  With that velocity I think a body shot should do in a rabbit or squirrell.   Even a ground hog.  After all a Remington Standard Velocity .22 Long Rifle with 40gr bullet is only traveling at 1150fps at the muzzle.

I bought a pack of those PBA's, tried them in a Shadow and in my old Crosman 760.  Out of the Shadow, got the sonic crack, and in the 760 stuck pellets.  Decided if I wanted a sonic crack, I could just shoot a .22 rimfire, and well, it kinda totally ticked me off that two got stuck in the 760.  Sold 'em at a flea market so they could experiment with 'em.   ::)

The Whisper has a suppressor to suppress thet sonic crack.  That way you don't upset the neighbors.

The sonic crack is from the pellet itself and a suppressor cannot change that.  What it does do is lessen the sound of the air escaping from the barrel behind the pellet.

There is a huge difference between a 40 grain .22 bullet and a .177 pellet weighing less than 7 grains!! Like 600% more energy plus a larger diameter. But with that said, I don't trust body shots on small game with a .22 LR either. I have seen pheasants and grouse fly away after being shot through the body with .22 long rifles. Marmots will nearly always make their hole after being hit with a .22 LR unless in the head. When I got my first .22 my dad told me "if you can't hit it in the head, don't shoot it with a .22". But I read in some magazine where the "expert" recommended chest shots on squirrels with high speed hollowpoints and I thought "surely that expert knows more than my old hillbilly father". But when that first squirrel disappeared into a hollow tree after taking an LR hollowpoint through the chest I found that old hillbilly was right after all.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

I now see there is a .22 Whisper on their website.  I wonder if that is louder.  Noise could be a problem where I now live.  At the old house I could just have used my 30.06.  ;D

I have been considering one of these since I have a rabbit problem in my garden and I live near other homes. Has anyone used this rifles in .177 on rabbits @ 20 yards of so.

Not sure as I haven't compared but my Shadow doesn't seem to be overly loud. Seems if the Whisper is as advertised you got a winner.
