45-70 Starting load
« on: May 23, 2008, 11:59:02 AM »
Anyone got a good accurate starting load with 4198 and 300 gr jacketed Hornadys .... with say medium recoil. :o

Just like to limit my time behind this mule.

Thanks

Hornady lists 42.3gr H4198 start @ 1600fps, 51.2gr max @ 2100fps in their 20" barrel levergun data. Win brass and Fed 210 primer.

I use a bit more H4198 than the max data for 2425fps with the 300gr Nosler Partition, I wouldn't do it with the Hornady bullet tho, it's not made for  velocities beyond 2200fps, they don't list it in their Ruger data, it's limited to 2100fps in the 458 Win Mag, 2200fps in the 450 Marlin.

Still, it will be all the recoil you'll want, maybe more!! :o

Thanks Tim,

I loaded up 43.5 and 49.5 of the 4198 with the 300 gr.  I may go shoot it tomorrow, do I need to pray  ;D?

By the way, the chamber seems really loose, is that normal for one of their new barrels?

Yea, it seems somewhat oversize in it's chamber bore.

You'll know when you see the spent brass, there will be a slight bulge on the brass, but I wouldn't be concerned about it, it's always possible tho.

this load would consistently put 5 shots into one ragged 1 1/4" hole.
  imr 4198- 42 grains
  Hornady 300 grain hollowpoint
  Probably about 1800 fps
  Moderate recoil
  good shooting!

I have loaded just one shell with 28.0gr of 2400 and a 300gr Rem HP. This was just a pressure test load out of the Handi.  The recoil is very mild.
Sierrra lists that powder from 24.5 gr to 29.7 gr for trapdoor pressures
For Lever Action and similar they go up 33.6 gr.
They also show higher loads for the Ruger# 1 and similar

I shoot 56.1 grains H4198 behind 300 grain JHPs and get <1moa, usually cloverleafs.  But, it is pretty stout, you could back off a lot.
