20 Ga. USH for Deer?
« on: May 23, 2008, 04:59:45 PM »
I'm getting ready to purchase an Ultra Slug Hunter for deer but I can't decide on a 12 gauge or a 20 gauge.    Does a 20 gauge have enough knock-down power outside of 100 yards?  Is the accuracy of a 20 gauge better than a 12 gauge?  Any help would be much appreciated.

I am having the same question's...Last year I HAD to have the USH 12.... Till I shot it!  It is the talo speacial with the thumbhole stock Beautiful gun... Seems to like lightfield's ok...  Wouldnt tolerate the SST I have been buying up some other brands for when and IF I get my courage up to shoot it again. I want to put together a slug gun that is capable of 200 yd accuracy. I even got a GREAT deal here on a like new 12 ga prohunter barrel for my Encore. But after getting my hands on it I see a MULE in disguise...shoulder hurts just looking at it. I have a couple friends that have the 20ga USH and say they kick no more than a .410. And Accuracy is 2" groups and under @100yds for them... The ballistics on the 12 and 20 are very close to 150yds. Every person that I have asked has told me that a 20ga is plenty enough out to 200 yds ...If we fo our part.... I want to get a 20 for my Encore.. And am thinking REAL seriously about another USH in 20 for my wife..And a precious little granddaughter growing up..she is onlu just shy of 4 right now...But I cant wait for the day  when I get to take her out with me......Anyway back to the subject, I think a 20 sighted in with the right bullet will be plenty. Good Luck Drop

The 12 ga USH is one of the lightest recoiling 12 ga slug guns on the market mostly due to its weight.  Also understand that the ammunition you fire makes a huge difference on recoil.  I am not understanding many people's complaints to the recoil.  Maybe it's just that I grew up hunting in a shotgun only state.  Try firing an 870 or 500 slug gun in 12 ga with 3" magnums and >1oz slugs.  Then you will feel some recoil.

A 20ga slug is more than capable at 100+ yards considering deer can be taken with a 357mag which is much less powerful at 100yrds.

I''ve had the 20 for 7 years.   7 shots 7 deer.  None  went over 20 yards before going down.  Most piled up in a heap without a step.  Use Win. partiton gold slugs. 2 3/4 in.

Your buddies give you a little wink when they tell ya it kicks no more than the .410 ;) I does give a very good wallop but not as bad as the 12 and is more than capable but it's not a 200yard gun by any means. Kurt

Ive taken a couple deer with my 20 ush, but all were 40 yards or less. it shoots real nice groups at 100 yds at the range, though. I think that you would be real happy with either gun.

I shoot the lightfield slugs, and the recoil seems to be a little less than the other mag loads. I tried the Hornady slugs last year. they shot a little down and left form the lightfields, but still grouped well
