1911 slide conversion kit
« on: May 24, 2008, 08:36:42 AM »
Anyone have a recommendation where I can buy a complete 1911 slide conversion kit (minus the barrel and magazine) for 40 S&W or even 9MM caliber ?

hicard:  I picked up a new slide with sights for the 45 acp, from SARCO, if I recall right.  I saw an ad in the Shotgun News.  They also have slides for the 38 Super and I am tempted to get one.  The 38 Super slide would allow you to install a 9mm barrel.

I don't believe Colt makes a 10/40 S&W package anymore but STI makes a 1911 in 40 S&W and you may be able to have them fit a slide to your 1911 or purchase one from them directly.

HTH.  Mikey.

Thanks Mikey, I'll check them both out.  I would sure like to get a complet upper half in 10mm or 40 s&w.

Hicard. Is there some reason you are looking for a kit? You can buy the parts and put it together yourself.

I wanted to avoid the possible problem with incompatible parts and having to scrounge parts I forgot to order with the other parts and etc.  Anyway I did order a slide, extractor, ejector, firing pin and spring and stop plate.  Hope I remembered everything and everything works together.  I ordered the caspian ss slide.  I will try to use the original guide, guide spring, magazine and front end thingy (forgot the nomenclature}.

Naw - The 'end thingy' is the end thingy that holds the recoil spring in.  A barrel bushing is the 'end thingy' with a hole in it.  How's that for proper nomenclature??

Ya, barrel bushing.  Old age is hell.  Anyway, I got my 9mm barrel yesterday and installed in in my 38 super and had some difficulty at first as the slide would not open at first.  A little break free and working the action w/o the "barrel bushing" helped and I was finally able to get the slide to come back.  Now the 9mm works great with near max 9mm loads and I am real happy with it.  I am now waiting for the 40 s&w slide and parts to arrive and hope it goes as well.

Hi,

What other parts are needed to get a 9mm/38Super to work on a 45 frame??  I thought that the ejector would need to be replaced.

Paul - sometimes you have to replace the ejector to get proper ejection of 9mm/38 Super/9x23 brass but other times you can just work down the ejector to geet the new slide to fit.  I did that with a 38 Super slide I mounted to my Springfield 45 frame.  Works good.  Mikey.
