Lightening a Plastic Stock
« on: May 26, 2008, 03:18:21 AM »
Got a Rem. replacement stock from Cabela's. It's for a Rem. Model 7and has the Limbsaver Pad. Don't know the make, but assume that it is an injection Molded. Could be one of the Rynites. Anyways, it is as heavy as a Wood Stock. Would like to take some weight off. Any tricks that I should know? Figure I would just start taking Material in areas that May have extra, without impacting the structural support.

Check under the recoil pad in the butt and see if it has any added weight for recoil reduction.  Larry

Thanks - Larry. It just seems to have a plastic Plate to screw the Pad into. The plate will wiggle. but doesn't want to come out

You might try removing the rear sling stud. I've seen these plates fastened that way.  Of course the problem is the stock. An injection molded stock is heavy for a synthetic. One of the Kevlar laminated designs is much light. Usually removing material from the molded stocks reduces the already lacking stiffness of the design.

It shows to go ya, a good rule of thumb when looking at synthetic stocks is: The lighter ones are more expensive, and the cheaper you go, the heavier you get.

JMO, but I wouldn't fool with it, as I'd hate to have a so weakened stock break at some inopportune moment.

The Stock got the Pressure points relieved, Floated and Bedded. Shoots very well. Told My Brother that this is as far as can be done. Any trimming wouldn't be much of a gain. Thanks for YourAdvises
