New Purchase.....Lapping Question
« on: July 21, 2003, 04:02:36 AM »
I finally cashed in the coin jar (literally) and got the following setup:

Ruger SRH in .44 Mag.
Leupold M8 - 2X scope
Hogue Monogrips

I noticed in another thread started by Stoots, congratulations on the same purchase    people were talking about lapping the scope rings.

Though I have a general idea of what lapping is.  Since this is my first firearm with a scope, I was wondering if someone could explain this in more detail.

Thank you in advance.

Steve

You use a lapping bar, either buy one or just use a 1" piece of good steel bar stock, and some lapping compuond and lap the bottoms of the mounted rings so that they align with each other. Missaligned rings will put your scope in a bind and can cause you scope to fail. It will also leave nasty ring marks,(dents) in your scope tube. It's not hard to do and usually only takes a few minuets. Well worth the trouble.  KN

If you are referring to the lapping of scope rings I made a post some while back in response to another such query that you can find at:

I believe it will have the information you seek.

If you are referring to lapping the barrel I'd not bother on a handgun. Just me but I don't do it.

Thank you much guys!!!

A friend of mine, who used to shoot competitively, has offered to lap them for me.

How much longer until January 16-18, 2004...........Whitetail handgun season in Illinois

Thanks again!!!!!
