Finally took my Rock Island Armory 1911 military model to the range yesterday.I ran 100rds. of WW white box hardball through it using the factory magazine and two Chip McCormick 10rd. magazines.Accurate and reliable.Only complaint.With my new tri-focals the sights are a little hard to see.

I held a used RIA 45 the other day for the first time. I felt pretty good and if I had an extra $300 laying around it would have gone home with me. I couldn't believe how well built it was for such low prices. I'd get the model with the wide beavertail safety grip on the end if I could.

I have about 400 rounds through my GI model without a single hiccup. This is my first .45 auto and it will stay with me for a long time. I will probably install a beavertail and some mesquite grips, but that's about it. I would recommend RIA to anyone. Can't wait to get mine out to the range again.

Never shot one so I can't reply from personal experience. I can comment from wast my local gunshop owner has told me. I have known him for a looooong time, well before he opened the gun shop as a salesman for a supply stoe I purchased from for years before retiring. His day job is manager of that store now and his wife runs the store while he is working. Never caught him in an untruth.

He said he sells a bunch of them and they just work. Hardly ever a problem. His main problem is getting enough of them to supply the demand.

The only real upgrade in a 1911 that I'd want is a wider grip safety and I've seen that the "tactical" models have that. I've seen them on gunbroker for $425, but by the time you go through all the hassle you'll have $500 wrapped into it after tax & transfer fee. Is one of those models worth that much?

I'd sure invest the extra $100 in the "Tactical Model" ( I hate that word!!!) I consider the sights, beavertail, ring hammer, and extended safety as "must haves" on a 1911 pattern pistol. The tiny GI sights are slow to aquire, and make the pistol pretty much unservicable for anything other than a plinker. The other items are ones you'd install anyway sooner or later. Might as well have what you want up front. All observations IMO only, of course.

I couldn't agree more abuot hating when people use the word tactical to describe a gun that's got two or three different parts than a regular plane jane model. I just think those different parts make the gun more user friendly. The wider safety grip makes all the difference in the world when it comes to actual shooting comfort.

The 1911 in plain jane attire was Tactical when it came out in 1911 , Ain't that why they made it in the first place ?
Up graded or enhanced maybe ?

I love mine the only change is trijon night sights (needed for older eyes the g.i. sights were great when i was 20) actually boring to shoot because it just fires round after round were you want to put them nothing to fix. LOL

I like mine alot, not as fancy as the Kimbers or Les Bauer my friend shoots.
But it will run round for round with any of them. Actually two of those
$1200 pistols had a few failures with some reloads, The RIA just shot anything
I fed it. Good pistol for the money will be buying a couple more.
The only thing I did to mine was add Millett adj. sights.

Actually the L.B. is a $1700 gun, way nice! The Kimbers had the FTF but the reloads were
the problem, SWC and a little bit on the long side.

Not that it matters but so do I. Seems 90% of those who think in terms of "tactical" are gun show camo-covered pencil necked geeks or beer bellys with a desire to feel tough. In my limited life experience (I'm only 67), those who are really tough don't feel any need to play a self-deluding role.

The RIAs I've seen are tough. They don't need any piccatinney rails, no lazer beams, no hang on lights or bayonets, no anything but hard ball ammo and a target. And they speak with the full auithority of the .45 ACP, not some 9mm European weanie cop cartridge that's no more than a +P .38 Special with light bullets.

IMHO only, of course.

Actually, the manufacturer is "Armscor", Try a search for that. They build a lot of guns, long guns as well as handguns. I had one of their .38 revolvers styled sort of like a Colt police positive and it was very well built, not finely finished, but for under 200 it seems like quite a deal.

RIA is a nice durable and inexpencive way to be introduced to the Colt 1911 clones. At the right shop, one can obtain a RIA and 2 boxes of 230gr FMC .45ACP ammo for less than $400 tax included. And, part of the fun of owning one, is that you have the pleasure of giving it character by upgrading it when and as you want.

Go to the latest edition of shotgun news and look at sarco's ad they sell the full size and the compact. FFl transfer of course you can also buy parts and make your own from a kit (not an ria)www.sarcoinc.com
