Where to hunt black bear?

Hello All, :D

I want to go hunting for black bear next year, 2004, and would like to hear from some bear hunters on where would be some good places to go?

I live in Calif., I know I’m sorry too, and can only travel as far as the neighboring states but I can go to Washington too.

I am planning on using my Ruger Blackhawk .45 LC with a 300-grain swaged lead core, copper tubing jacketed bullet, of my own making, at a muzzle velocity of around 1150 to 1250 FPS as my primary gun and a Marlin .45-74 lever with 410-grain swaged lead core, copper tubing jacketed bullet, also of my own making, at a muzzle velocity of around 1900 FPS as my back up gun.

I’m working up a load for the .45 LC now and with a 300-grain bullet at 1150 FPS at 50 yards I can cover a 4 shot group with a quarter. The load work up looks promising. :wink:   After my .458 caliber bullet swaging die set arrives I’m going to work up a load for my Marlin 1895SS in .45-70.

Donna,

I know you're looking for a state adjacent to California, but give Alaska a look.  In the Fall, the bears are thick in Alaska and you can find at least one almost every day on a hillside above treeline on the Kenai Peninsula.  I've only got a year left up here  :cry: and black bear will be my "every-so-often" return trip with folks from the lower-48.  No guarantees anywhere, but for a near thing try Alaska.

Vancouver Island isn't too far away from you.  The island beats out every other piece of land.  With something like 8 to 9 bear per square mile it has consistant big bear kills. I'd imagine they have some 20 inch skulls up that way.  Give it a look and get a price.

Why would you want to hunt Az, Nv, Or or Wa over Ca?

A quick look at the B&C record book says that Ca is turning the big Boars.

There is very good Bear hunting in the Sierra and NorCal coastal mts.

If I were to travel I would travel to SE Alaska. It is one of the best Bear hunts there is.

Indeed Vancouver Island is loaded with Blackbears. (it has been nic-named the bear factory) You would see lots of animals and are pretty much garaunteed a decent one. Law requires that non-residents hire a quide. Your allowed two bears. Sorry, due to stupid laws, handguns are out of the question.

Just out of curiosity, what do you Americans do in regards to handguns when traveling through Canada to Alaska?

Hello eroyd, :D

Well there are a couple of ways to handle handguns going to Alaska. One by post, is to have a Gun Shop ship it to another gun shop in Alaska; two by air, take it in the check through luggage on the airline with you; three by sea, take it in your luggage on the boat with you; four by land, smuggle it in your car or truck (LOL). :-D

:D Think about Minnesota. Tags are not that hard to get and they have a number of guides and it's reasonably priced.
