Strength of Buffalo Classic in .45 Colt
« on: May 29, 2008, 02:01:02 PM »
Hello all.  I am gonna get one of these rifles and was wondering about lock up and chamber strength.  Am also interested in opinions form those of you that shoot the BC .45 Colt.  Great looking rifle, perfect caliber for my use and am gonna soon get one.
Thanks,
Oregonjohn

Same strength as any other SB2 H&R, all centerfire rifle barrels are 4140 alloy, they're chambered in 270 Win and 500 S&W with SAAMI MAPs of 65kpsi and 60kpsi respectively, I just rechambered my 45 Colt BC  to 460 S&W, if I ever get to the range, I'll post a report. ;)

Hey quickdtoo.  Does H & R make a .460 S & W barrel?  Or did you have a smith re-chamber your rifle?  Will the .460 chamber still handle the .45 Colt and .454 Casull.
Thanks
OJ

Does H & R make a .460 S & W barrel?  No.

Or did you have a smith re-chamber your rifle? Yes, but did it myself, rented a reamer from 4D and hand reamed it.

Will the .460 chamber still handle the .45 Colt and .454 Casull? Yes

I got one a while back and like it.  Did have a problem at first with the extractor not letting the case come out with my reloads.  Did the cowboy loads fine as the case didn't expand enough to lock it up.  A little time with a battery powered dremel at the range to fix that and all is fine. :)  All my 45 colts are strong enough to take the heavier loads, so I had some that really get your attention with the metal butt plate. :o  Hunting wouldn't be a problem, but wearing a T-shirt and putting 30 + rounds down range left some purple lines on the shoulder. :'(  Tim has a picture of his Target with a real good looking strap-on pad that he said works fine.  ( He didn't show the picture of the Lead-Sled.)  Anyway, with a coat on for hunting or milder (not cowboy either) loads it's not bad at all.  Gettin old enough I need to quit pushing loads anyway.  Got the 454 or 444 or 45-70 to do that if I need to feel some pain. ::)  Get it, you will like it! ;)  DP.

Tim,

Re-chambering a 45 Colt to 460 S&W is a frightening proposition!  I’ve loaded up 300gr JSPs Sierras with 18.8gr of 2400 (load for Sierra Manual) in the 45 Colt and fired them through my Handi.  With the metal but plate they really hammer your shoulder; the 460 would take that to an entirely different level.  If I were to re-chamber one of my rifles I’d probably go with the 357 Magnum to 357 Maximum.  On second thought, COUNT ME IN…

Interested to hear how the .460 shoots.
Just rechambered a 45 Handi to 454 Casull. Might just have to rent another reamer and open her up just a bit more!
