32 Long Colt
« on: May 30, 2008, 12:48:52 PM »
A friend has an early 1900's Colt-New Pocket Revolver.
He asked me if I would be willing to help load up some rounds with him
as the rounds are getting hard to come by and at a price.

I have been doing some searching and am not coming up with dies
or much info at all.
I searched this site and found 1 reference about Redding dies but a
search on their site came up empty.

Anyone have any input?
Thanks,
Mike

Can't help with dies but will say that even if you find dies you will have a problem finding bullets. These Colt rounds, .32 short and long, were originally loaded with heeled bullets and later with undersized hollow based bullets just like the .38 , .41, and .44 Colt rounds. If he just wants to fire a few rounds I believe the .32 short Colt is still available, though hard to find. If he really wants to return this gun to active service the best bet would be to have it rechambered to .32 S&W long for which ammo and components are common. The Colt bores are the same .313" as the S&W round, just the chamber diameters are smaller for use of the heel type bullets. "Cartridges of The World" has the story on this round and is by far the best single reference book one should own.

Thanks Joe,
I'm thinking he should sell the gun and buy something he can go have fun with.
He did buy a box from Old Western Scrounger but I think he said $90.00 a box.
Any Idea what it might be worth?

Not being a collector I can only say "it is worth whatever someone is willing to pay". You might do a search on Gunbroker.com and perhaps get an idea of what people are asking for them. It certainly is not a "shooters gun".

A quick google search turned up Sprotsmans Guide listing the .32 short Colt, Winchester brand, at $28.47 per box of fifty.

I do not know you :-\
But my wife told me that the difference between
32 long and 32 short is taken into consideration.
Sure wish she liked magnums ::)
Any way, working on the seating depths,
But after 20 years think I will have to  jump to the lands ::)
Guess she is a weatherbey sort of gal
