180gr Speer in .357 Magnum
« on: May 31, 2008, 08:12:39 AM »
I love experimenting with loads for my 357 Magnum Handi.  I've always wanted to try the 180gr Speer bullet in this cartridge ever since I saw it in the Speer #10 Reloading Manual over twenty years ago.

The Lyman Pistol and Revolver Handbook #3 also has some interesting loads in the Contender Section for the .357 Magnum using the Lyman # 358315 204gr Lead Round Nose Gas Check (LRN GC).  Of which I'll be ordering a few hundred from Western Bullet Co.

That looks good.  Just picked up 500 Nosler 180's for a good price and thought they might work good out of the 357 after I get it taken to a Max.  If not, I'm sure they will work OK with the 35 Rem.  What powder did you use with your loads?  DP.

I'm using cases from fired 125gr JHPs Remingtons', 15.5gr of H110, and CCI 550 Magnum Small Pistol Primers.  For the longer barrels H110 give a little better perfomance than 2400.

Ever tryed Lil'Gun?  I used to use nothing but H-110, but have pretty much switched behind 158 g. bullets.  Haven't tryed it behind the 180's yet.  Have heard some bad things about Lil'gun on other sites, but I really like it.  DP.

I like lil'gun behind 158's as well. But I haven't heard anything really bad. Is the bad talk behind the 180's.

Some grumbling about velocity swings over 150 fps shot to shot.  I haven't run my loads accross the chrono yet, but I'm using a charge that I got out of Handloader Mag. that is over what Hodgdon lists in their annual manual.  Their top load is listed at a pretty low pressure for the 357, that may be part of the problem with the swings.  Just guessing here, lot of folks know more about pressure needs of different powders to burn properly than I do.  At the charge I'm using it seems to burn clean and groups better than it would with that much of a swing, IMHO  ;)  DP.
