Hey Guys,
What do you guys think about the 223wsm or 243wsm for deer. I was thinking of buying one for the wife. Anything for an excuse to buy another rifle.
I'm for gun control as long as I'm the one controlling the gun!!!

Adstrin :  Since both are relatively new to the deer hunting scene I guess I would go with the 243 wsm over the 223 solely because I think a 22 caliber bullet is a little small and the 243 on the low end as well, but alot of deer are killed yearly with the 6mm cal. as well as quite a few with the 22 cal. but I think the 243 will do a good job as long as quality bullets of 100 gr are used. :D   JIM

why dont you get her a .270? it is a excellent deer cartridge and has light recoil.

imo, you would be better off with a 30-30 in a bolt.   light recoiling, accurate, and deadly.   but then, it isnt glamourous.       whatever you do, dont even think about using a 22 cal for deer.

myronman3,

I would go for the 243. Little recoil and a much better game getter than the 223. A bit more recoil, but not much that anyone would care or notice.

Seen any moose up thier latly ? Someone I know of claims to have seen a numbers of Moose on the east side of Big Chetec by county rd F just a few miles south of Chit Chat's.

My wife uses a 44 magnum Rugar Auto and has taken two spikes with it. In this mountain country we don't usually have long shots.

If ABSOLUTELY limited to either a .223 WSM or a .243 WSM, I'd definitely go for the .243 WSM.

However,  a better choice might be something having light recoil, but with more bullet weight making it a better, lighter recoiling rifle/cartridge combination for deer than the .243 WSM.

The larger (7mm & up) calibers could double as a reasonable elk, black bear, caribou and even moose rifle/cartridge under most circumstances for those hunters who occasionally mix the larger game with their regular menu of venison.

Some that come to mind for deer would be the Savage 250/3000 or the new .260 Remington and, for game larger than deer, the famous 7mm Mauser (7X57) or the excellent .300 Savage... all of which are within a woman's "kick" tolerance (15 ft/lbs & under).

Something to think about, my friend...

Guess I'll be an oddball here, but I think a 7mm08 would be a great choice for a lady. It has a short action, a good seclection of bullets and a lil more uuummmpth to get the job done. I think I might would look at the Winchester Mod 70 Featherweight also just cause I think its pretty. :?

I think I would not go with any of the short mags.  Just my opinion tho.

Personly I don,t like the .223 as a deer gun an the .243 is also a bit light.
I would go for the 25-06 as a good youth or ladies gun.
The 30-30 as mentioned is one of the allround best. What ever, teach em,
good shot placement and enjoy the meal.CHEERS JACK.

really as far as ballistics 243wsm is not that much faster than 6mm.its not that hot at all. i think with trophy bonded bearclaw 223wsm would do as good as 224TTH. this bullet is really cooking.I believe it would be great on small deer (100lbs) but if there was even a possibility of big deer i would certainly wish i had more gun. I have never shot 7mm-08 but am considering one for my son. it dont take a whole lot to kill our tx deer i believe we dont need near as much gun as northern deer. 120 here is a pretty big deer. if it is broadside get knife ready. I will catch alot of flack but stout bullets in 22-250 must be seen to believe. Texas Trophy Hunters assoc. pretty much come up with 224tth i think 6mm necked down to 224.and 223wsm should be just as effective. 223 is wicked to 100yds then to slow. with trophy bonded bearclaw please dont try varmint bullet you will be disappointed.223 is 100yd 223wsm should be 300. 224tth they claim 400yds. i feel 22-250 would be best for factory

None of the above

260 or 7-08 , solid deer killers but not much more recoil.

If you are entertaining the thought of going out west sometime in the future, the 223WSM is not legal for big game BUT the 223WSM is a lot of fun in a prarie dog town. The 243WSM is a great deer, antelope, and varmint round so I'd opt for it as an all around weapon.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

I don't care if the bullet is going at warp speed, its still a .22.  I suggest getting something bigger.  Something bigger than a .243 also.  Make your choice starting at the .260 or 6.5 Swede.
