« on: June 01, 2008, 12:30:14 PM »
well now that i have purchased the buffalo classic i discovered the twist is 1:20 and they say this is not enough to carry a 500 grain bullet with accuracy out to 500 meters. any ideas would be appreciated.

Give her a shot, I don't think you will have problems with the 1 in 20 twist.  Each barrel has it's own way of workin', you might get a pleasant suprise.  1 in 38 isn't supposed to group 44's heavier than 240, but I've owned ones that would.  DP.

Not a problem, that's internet BS, there are several here that shoot their BCs to 600 and beyond, John Boy has done 1000yds and Bernie has even done 600yds with the Williams FP sight and .404" 17A front sight, see Long Range Sights in the FAQs and Help, spend some time in there, lots to learn. ;)

at this point i am not interested in casting so could you advise of a practical 500+ grain bullet to start with and who the supplier might be.

I don't cast any more, so I buy em too, one of the least expensive is Western Bullet, I've not used any pointy bullets yet, but all of his bullets that I've used shot very well. Down in the Cast Bullet forum there's a sticky on cast bullet sources, Montana Bullet would be another good one. Slug the bore (see FAQs) then buy bullets that are .001"-002" larger in diameter than the groove diameter of your bore.

Char ... The bullets that win at the Raton Nationals are Postells - PJ Creedmoors and the Paul Jones  Mini Groove.  All of these bullets can be purchased from SageBrush Outfitters and they cast mighty fine bullets:

I have shot them all in the H&R with excellent results from the Postells and Creedmoors.  Still working on the Mini Groove  ;)
