« on: June 01, 2008, 04:00:47 PM »
What are some scopes with long eye relief ,8 to 14 inches of relief ?Hoping to rig up a scout rifle, need some idea,s on some scopes .Hope to use a rifle scope over a pistol scope if i can.
I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.

I think the distinction between a pistol scope and a rifle scope is the eye relief. With you talking that long of an eye relief, you are talking pistol scope. Usually pistol scopes when used in a scout set up; they are mounted very low, so they do not have very big "bells" on them. Pistol scopes are normally in the 2X to not much more than 7X range. Scout set ups generally use low powered scopes so that target pick up is quick with both eyes are open to follow running game, in the 2X or 3X area. There are exceptions. Burris for one makes some high powered pistol scopes. The following is a "pistol" scope, but has the dimensions and power of a rifle scope. It is 3X - 12X with a 32mm Objective bell. I do not have one, but I would think that eye relief gets fairly critical when on 12X, so the range would be cut down, maybe in the 10" range with out much plus or minus. That is just a guess. Field of view is 4' at 100 yards, which is the problem when you get long eye relief and high power. I do not want to be discouraging, but I would think if you really want a scout set up it would be for running game or close game. A low powered scope would suit it fine.

The perfect scope for what you want is the Burris handgun 2x7x32 ballistic plex.
Why--1. It has 12" eye relief
2.It also has just about as much FOV as many rifle scopes at 100yds.
         3. Durable, mine has held zero on 12ga slug gun for a few hundred rounds!
         4. The ballistic plex really works.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.
