Best contender grip for heavy loads
« on: June 03, 2008, 12:52:01 AM »
I was shooting my contender (old-style, not G2) that has the wooden grip with the rubber insert.  With hot 44 mag loads, the edge of the wood was biting me at the web of my hand.  The trigger tang also was rapping me pretty good on the index finger.  My 5.5" super blackhawk was actually more comfortable to shoot!  Would a different grip help me?

Explain how in the world it raps your index finger.  Get some pachmeyer grips.

Contender grips need to be compatible with you hand size.  Personally I hate the factory wood/rubber grips, they just don't feel comfortable even with low-recoiling loads.  When I was more actively shooting silhouettes and firing about 400 heavy rounds a month, I found the Pachmayr "Gripper" rubber grips to work the best for me.  Their "Presentation" grips work well for guys with larger hands.  A few like custom wooden grips, it depends on hand size and recoil level I guess.  I found that grips with finger grooves guaranteed consistant hand placement and better accuracy, particularly with heavily-recoiling loads.  Even my .50-70 barrel didn't damage my hand with the rubber grips - but after 35 rounds of 750-grain loads my wrist was about gone.....

Get a custom set made, if you have a grip that fits your hand better, you will eliminate the rapping of you index finger. You problem is common, and the right grips will take care of that. Check out this place.  http://www.olegeorgiajim.com/
I got a set for my Encore in 500 mag, and I find it a lot more comfortable than any factory or Pachmyer grip.

I was shooting a 10" choked octagon 44mag barrel without a scope in comparison to my SW 29 and Ruger SBH to get a feel for recoil.  My other contender barrels are 22lr, 22hornet, and 357mag...all 10" bull barrels with scopes, which have very little recoil.  The index finger of my support hand was wrapped around my right hand and was positioned just under and behind the trigger guard.  Thanks for the suggestions.  Are the old Rynite grips any good?

The rynite grips are hard as a rock. I like the Pacymayr Gripper for the old contender. There are two versions - one with decellerator rubber which is softer.

As suggested, unless your hands are the prototype of TC's "one size fits all" grips, either custom grips made to fit your hand or the Pachy's will be your best choices.    I don't like the Pachy Presentation grips myself, but I have a bunch of their Decelerator Gripper sets.    They tame the handcannons just fine (albeit they are a bit small), but my custom Bullberry grip sets fitted to my hand are still the best for the big loudenboomers.

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Pachs in the Gripper format and get a stinking break for that barrel. I bought a super 14" in 44 mag and hated it instantly, kick was wicked and hurt my hand even with Pachs. My shooting hands middle finger would get smashed behind the trigger guard. I know own a 12" w/factory break and can shoot it many times with no problems.

I also recommend the Pacy gripper.  I've got a 14" in 357max.  Been shooten them hot in my DW revolver for years without a problem.  First time I lit one in the contender with factory wood grip; I almost lost it.  Went straight to gunshop and bought a Pacy and never looked back.  If possible try a few styles of the grip to see what feels best for you.  Different people like different grips.

For me it's the pachy Presentation grips, these don't have the finger grooves.  The one with the grooves don't fit me at all, and hurt my hand before I even shoot!
