Hornady SST on game

I have a chance to get a bunch of these in 284 and 308 calibers.  Are they good deer an hog bullets?

Better on deer than hogs I would guess. They are similar in construction to a Ballistic Tip. I've shot the Hornady Interbonds before and they performed well, because they are bonded.

A guy I used to hunt with used the SSTs on hogs. He said they were very effective on hogs. I've heard that the SSTs are a tougher bullet than the Nosler BTs. I'v also heard that the Nosler BTs are a problem at very close ranges at high muzzle velocity. I think you'll find that they'll work just fine on hogs. Certainly they would do well on deer. You could also develop the SST load and if in doubt load up some interbonds for the hog hunts. I think you'll find that the SST and the interbonds are interchageable in the same load recipe. At least they are for my 30-06.

A co-worker of mine shot a cow elk with a 165 grain SST from his 300WSM and it made a complete pass through.

Even if I use them for target shooting these are a good deal, I am going to order some 165 on 30 and some 139grain 284 bullets. I have a rifle specifically for pigs anyway or could just use partitions in my 7x57 if Hogzilla shows up.

Excellet bullets - a bit of overkill for midsize deer. They are a big game bullet or in your case a hog bullet. The SST tip expands fast so try to hit the vitals on the hog or you will limit penetration at longer ranges. Very good accuracy in a good rifle.

I would not use them in a magnum at close range. They seem to do well at standard velocity (2800fps and less).

I have mixed feelings to report on these bullets. In faster hi-power rifles like my .280 Rem, they tend to blow up at close range, even more than your standard soft point. On a 130# doe shot at 35 yards, the 139 grain sst exploded as soon as it entered, no bones(other than ribs) were hit. Deer did die but I found fragments of the bullet in the deer. Exit hole from one small piece of lead approx. .223 size.
Deer #2 100lb doe shot with very different weapon, 12 gauge shotgun. 300 grain SST, 70 yard shot bullet went thru over 2 feet of deer, no fragmentation, deer dropped in tracks. Exit hole size of golf ball. No bones(other than ribs) hit.  Conclusion- SST's are better in larger calibers and do better at medium to long range.

   I have been using SST bullets for several years and have come to LOVE them. They have excellent on game performance as was proved in 2005 when I took 5 deer with 5 shots. All with a 308 laminated Handi mind you. They will also kill any paper you shoot with impressive groups but the most impressive of all tests was the way it kills 3/8 steel plates. My cousin and I were shooting at the 300 yard plates and after a few ringings we went to check out the 8" plate. I was utterly amazed and shocked to see that this load PUNCHED a clean, slick hole right through the plate. Somewhat unbelievable put completely true. These are some reliable and accurate bullets that I see no need to replace anytime soon. The load mentioned is a 165 gr. using a full charge of varget powder.  Hope this helps.

Yes I would hunt with those sst bullets. From what I've heard about them witch isn't much.
