Where do you buy your reloading supplies?
« on: June 05, 2008, 04:44:55 AM »
There are allot of places on line and in catalogs to buy loading supplies.  I find Midway's shipping and handling charges to be very high and their prices only fair.  I buy my powder and primers locally to avoid the HAZMAT charges.  So for the New-be, where do you buy your supplies?

The mail order places are good for bullets and brass, but primers and powder have a hazmat fee, so most buy powder & primer locally.
I do want to give Powder Valley a try, but you need to order in bulk to cover the hazmat fees.

Midsouth Shooters and Midway are my main source for components.
The Big Brown Truck can deliver my stuff to my little place out in the woods cheaper than what it costs me to drive. And I don't have the hassle of dealing with sales people that give you that "blank stare" when you ask if they have a certain component or find out they don't have it, but "we can order it for you".

Powder & primers local. If I loaded more, I would probably buy it online as well. There are some online vendors that will eat the hazmat fee if you have a large order.

Like others, I buy primers and powder locally, unless I happen to be traveling past a Cabella's store on the way to somewhere (the price is not that much cheaper, but there is so much more to look at than any of the local stores).  If I NEED something, I go immediately to http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/  and order it.  They are reasonable in price, customer service has always been knowledgeable about products, and they ship quickly.  Apparently they are a distribution center and not a store; therefore overhead is cut way down and prices reflect this.

Franks' Guns in Marcy, NY.  He always gives me a good price, and is probably cheaper or equal because of delivery costs.  MUCH cheaper than Gander Mountain.  His prices go up when he has to pay more, not on items already on the shelf.  I can order from him and he will get it pretty fast.  If I see something I need at a gun show, I might pick it up if the price is right.

I have ordered from Midway, Midsouth (sponser), Natchez (www.natchezss.com), and Graf & Sons (www.grafs.com). You can shop all of them for prices, somethings cheaper here, some there. Lately, Natchez has been pretty competative.

There are also others that I can't remember, or haven't actually dealt with.  I have a local place that I buy powder and primers from, they are always about $3 per pound cheaper than the larger gunshops in the area. And I only go into a Gander Mt. for laughs. City folks buy their stuff there.

I will order if I need something special, but shipping and Haz-MAt charges tend ot eat up any savings. I dirve a lot for a living and always stop into gun shops. I like to give my business to the little guy if I can, and then I have it in my hands to go home and load. Since I have been using my Cabela's Visa, I get to redeem my points for reloading gear!

Natchez won't ship to Alabama, so I'll get the tools from Midway, Midsouth, Cheaper than Dirt,  Sinclair and whoever is having a sale on what I need. Powder and primers are found in the BIG CITY, when I need to make a trip there...however, I'll usually call ahead to see if they have any in stock, because the "We can order it for you" doesn't cut it. Hell, I can order it.....

And I can always call my son who goes to the BIGGER CITY with regularity, and send him with a list....... ;D

I generally buy most of my stuff from GBO Sponsor Midsouth Shooter's Supply and have been doing so since the early 80s at least maybe longer. Since HAZMAT fees have gotten so high I pretty much never order powder or primers and pick them up locally most of the time at gun shows where prices seem a bit lower than at gun stores. Even the gun stores sell powder and primers for less at gun shows than at their store.

That midsouth shooters supply sure is hard to beat although I do buy locally when I can. Sometimes I will use Sinclair for tools and specialty items as they have a great selection.

If you have one powder that you use a lot of or you have a couple of buddies you can share crop with, it's still cheaper to bite the haz mat bullet and buy the 8# kegs.

I have been buying more and more from MidSouth Shooters Supply. Especially bullets, shooting gear and reloading paraphernalia. The last large quantity of cases was through Midway because #1 MidSouth does not handle Winchester brand and #2 what Remington I shoot (221 FireBall) MidSouth was out of. Over all, the prices are cheaper through MidSouth and they do have very good service. I have been buying powder and primers locally. No large quantities at a time, but a couple of pounds here and a pound there. Same for primers usually buy 500 at a time, but If I can find Reminton 7 1/2 I usually buy up what ever they have. They seem to be hard to get and spotty when they come in. I buy rim fire ammo the same way. When ever I am at the local store, I buy a bulk pack of 22's, aand/or box of 17 HMR or 22 WMR at a time. I am stocked up fairly well right now so I think I will be saving up and buy a large quantity through the Internet. Speaking of the Internet, if I buy 4 pounds of powder, I will recoup my hazmat fee, if more I will save money. Probably MidSouth, I think they will only charge 1 hazmat fee for a powder and primer shipment. I think Midway will not ship them together and charge 1 fee for each. Do not quote me on that, I have not ordered, just skimmed through some stuff.

The powders That I use a lot of I buy in 8pond kegs or larger.  Those include H414, H335, and H110 then I buy pounds of HS-6 and HP38. When possible I buy the kegs at the same time so I only pay 1 haz-mat fee. I haven't had to buy cases for a long time but I am always shopping for places to get bullets cheep.

I wanted to get some brass and bullets, so I checked Graf & Sons, MidSouth and Midway today. Midway was $5 more expensive , with Graf about fifty cents higher than Midsouth. Cheap that I am, I ordered from MidSouth.....

about twice a year the local Gander mountain has a twenty bucks off any $100 purchase and the coupons are in a stack by the door. Made two trips last week and got enough bullets, powder and primers for both .460s and the .357 to last till next Spring. With the discounts, the Gold Dots and XTPmags were cheaper than any of the on-line stores for standard JHP's and with no hazmat fees on the powders and primers or shipping charges, I stocked up while I could. I was lucky also...they had everything I wanted.  I tend to buy when something I want is on sale, not just when I need it. Coupla bucks here and a coupla bucks there, it all helps.  Last week while up in the U.P., I found some factory loaded Remington 158 jsp for the .357 on a back shelf in little mom and pop bait shop covered with dust and marked $21.95. Needless to say, even tho I didn't need 'em, I bought both boxes.. 'ell, nowadays, the brass alone is worth almost $20. Midway has unadvertised deals on reloading supplies  all the time so every so often I'll go online just to check if anything I use is on sale.

As others do I buy powder and primers local.  Everything else comes from Midway USA.  I find the prices pretty good....but then again thats because I get a discount from my C&R license  ;D (I found that lovely lic. does more than get me interesting guns delivered straight to my door.....I have probably used it to buy a heck of a lot more gear and supplies at discount!)

I check all the sales flyers from the main supply mail order places.  Also keep an eye on all local sales.  Just picked up several pounds of different IMR powder at Shipton's sale for $10.99 and $11.99 just cause they were in the cans instead of the new Hodgdon bottles.  Have done some major scores at yard and garage sales as well.  My wife is excellant at keeping an eye out for me.  She picked up a Lyman turrent press with 357 dies in it that looked brand new for $10.00! ;D  Third wife, but I'm keepin her. ;)  DP.
