I am on my second one. I gave one of my sons the first one I bought. All you need to do is to put it on the muzzle of the barrel and get it somewhere near the center of the scope. It is best if you have the alignment of the scale fairly close to up and down with the scope cross hairs. Then you sight through the scope and move the scope cross hairs with the adjustments on the scope until you are zeroed with the scale on the tool. It will get you close on paper if your crown is square with the barrel. You will still need to shoot to final zero the scope.
I really don't know how it centers things, but it does. I must have mounted a hundred scopes by now with the pair of them, and have never had a problem with either one (old and new style). It has saved hundreds of rounds of ammo. In a number of cases I have learned I have to shim mounts or use different rings to get the right setup before going to the range and having a frustrating time.
