Difference of Manual Saftey and Decocker in KP94 handgun
« on: July 22, 2003, 01:39:07 AM »
Hi, I have never purchased a hand gun before so i guess you can call me a newbie.... Anyway, My buddies have all kinds of centerfire semi auto pistols, and out of a Springfield XD, Glock 17, S&W, Sig 226, Hk USP 9, and a Ruger P93, I really like the Ruger.  I went to a local gun shop but the person working at the time didn't know hand guns, just rifles, and i never went back cause its a half our drive.  But I would like the know what the difference is between Ruger's P Series Hand Guns the Manual Saftey & Decocker.  What is their difference in use and which is better to have ????

I am currently looking at the Ruger KP94D.  Is this a good decision.  From what i have gather, the safty at the rear of the slide can be used to decock the GUN if the hammer has been pulled back manually, the safty lever can be used to pull down and decock the gun.  Am i right ???  Is it worth buying the Decocker Series or just the Maunal Saftey.  Also, what is the regular Maunal Saftey.

Ellasman,

As I understand it, the decocker only is a spring loaded affair, like on a Sig.  You use it to decock the piece, and it springs back to the ready position.  There is no "safety" feature on this type of gun.  The decocker/safety is not spring loaded, and when you use it to drop the hammer, the hammer cannot be cocked until you manually raise the lever.  Even if you work the slide, the hammer will fall on the block if the decocker/safety is down.

To me, the only safety that really counts is between your ears.  The more levers and wizzie gizzies you hang on a gun, the less I like it.  Presuming you practice safe handling technique, the safety on a double action semi-auto is just one more thing to remember/get in the way when it counts.  I'd opt for the decock only lever.

About the only time that I can see a safety on a double action coming in handy is if someone gets the gun away from you, and is not real clear on how it works.  That may give you a couple of extra seconds to rectify the problem.
The key to winning a gun fight is to take your time...quickly
