Is Hornady crazy??????????
« on: June 06, 2008, 12:07:47 PM »
Is Hornady crazy? I love Hornady products. They have always shot great out of any rifle I have ever put them in. I was just on their site and it looks like they have had a major price increase. They want $56.06 for a box of ( 100 count ) 85 grain Interbonds. I was also looking at the 58 grain VMAX Molly coated that my rifle loves. They want $28.00 for 100 of them. https://www.hornady.com/shop/?ps_session=057d3d3bc2db06965faac309bb38a889&page=shop%2Fbrowse&category_id=b8726155409af7b53d4d0d4cc83092f4      I went to Midway to compare prices and it is something like $10.00 a box cheaper for the 58 grain VMAX and like $18.00 cheaper for the 85 grain Interbonds. Could it be that the cost has not hit the retailers yet? Or is the Hornady site just that far over priced. I have to say those are crazy high prices. I was also reading customer reviews on the bullets and one guy stated the 75 grain Vmax bullets were less than $11.00 a 100 bullets. I then noticed he made the review in 2004. So for the most part the price has doubled since 2004. This makes me sick. Forgive for venting here but prices on everything are out of control. Most reloading components have increased 100 to 200 percent in the last year. Lead shot in 25# bags is now over $50.00 per bag. You use to buy these for 18-19 per bag. Hornady must sell at the MSRP others can discount the price.

Everything is moved by trucks. Raw material costs have also increased.
I sell construction equipment and have been telling customers that their cost have gone up 30% on my equipment.

No there not. They are just trying to stay from going bankrupt along with every other company.

and whats causing this sudden about to go bankrupt deal? i work for a trucking co and we get a fuel surcharge and then it is passed on to you and i when we purchase the products off the shelf. the manafacturer can only absorb so much of the fuel cost it takes to move the product.hope hornady and other companies make it through this. bullets to re-load to kill deer and fill freezer are not luxury items in my eyes.

I think I will go out in the garage tomorrow and cast 400 or 500 bullets for my 44 magnum and my 45-70.  I picked up close to a ton of casting lead about a year ago when I saw this price craziness coming.  I guess I will just shoot more cast bullets, and less jacketed bullets.  Thank goodness I also ordered a bunch of powder and primer's last year.  Tom.

Folks thought me crazy when I bought a 10 year supply of loading stuff for my .270, .357 and 45/454 last year.
Now I be glad I did.

I hit every sale I see and get some things from garage sales as well.  The wife, bless her heart, is always on the lookout for "My Toys" when she goes out garage saleing.  She has found guns, presses, bullets and chronographs for me when she goes out, and I really pity the people she hits with her offers.  She got a Lyman turret press with 357 dies for $10.00 last fall. ;D  DP.

some manufacturers charge full list price to discourage dealing direct with the public sector and keep peace with their dealers. now couple that with high fuel costs and you can see that high price.

the only redeeming factor may be they have an outlet on sight for selling reject bullets,
but the last time i checked they only sell thru their outlet.dan

I think that warrior1 has it nailed. It is pretty common practice for a manufacturer to charge more than retail and certainly more than wholesalers. The local stores around here charge almost as much for bullets as Hornady lists theirs for. Just a little less. If you went to Hornady and said you wanted to buy 20,000 of the same bullets, I am pretty sure you could get a big discount for volume buying.
