Browning CITORI Problem (?)
« on: June 07, 2008, 10:26:00 AM »
Recently got a Browning CITORI Trap gun.  It is not a current model as it was made in 1973.  It has seen a considerable amount of target use but is still a pretty decent looking and functiong shotgun but seems to have one very questionable problem.  After each shot, the opening latch moves almost to the opening position, on it's own.  Then if the latch is just moved a tiny bit more, the action is completely open.  Anyone else have this problem?  I had not tried it out but just this morning my son tried it out for the first time since we got the gun and of course he was reluctant to load both chambers at the same time not knowing what the hell may happen on the second shot.  Has only used the top bbl so far so I don't know if this problem would occur with the bottom bbl too.  Seems as if the recoil is giving the latch enough kick/shove to move it almost to the opening position.  The only ammo he had used has beenTRAP/target loads, nothing more.  Anyone????

Never seen or heard of such a problem but suspect it might be wear of the parts that lock the gun. I'd have it checked out by a competent gunsmith or return it to Browning for repairs. It shouldn't be much of a problem to fix for a competent smith or the factory. It might just be it needs a good cleaning and lubing which I'd do first but for sure if it continues I'd have it checked before shooting it a lot more.

Hey Blaster, hope this is not too late but I have put over 100,000 rds through Citori's and I know what the problem is. The locking block is worn, pretty simple for a smith to fix and not a big expense. I have Jerrie White in Ft. Collins do mine, he is precise, quick and not that expensive. Broke my first 100 straight with a Citori in Laramie Wyo. Best gun for the buck going. Good luck.
