load for lee 450 cast bullet in Handi
« on: June 08, 2008, 04:49:18 PM »
Just wondering if anyone here has a favorite load they would be willing to share using a 450 grain cast bullet in a 45-70 Handi.  I am wanting to get around 1500 FPS.

Thanks in advance
Dan

I've used the 450 quite a bit. You can use the published loads for the Lyman 457125 500 grain.

Thanks SmokinJoe

How is accuracy and at what velocity do recommend?  Sorry for all the questions but, I'm new to the cast bullet game.

Thanks again

It'll rock you back with authority above 1400, but it penetrates like a freight train. The way mine are sized, the nose portion is a "bore-riding" section. If you're does the same thing, put a little lube on it just ahead of the top band.
Accuracy with mine (.458 diameter, Lyman #2 alloy) is pretty good at around 1200-1300'. I didn't really do any serious testing.

You might want to take a look at the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook:
