300 WSM Loads Needed for Elk!
« on: June 09, 2008, 05:25:15 AM »
I am loaning my Tikka 300 WSM to my brother-n-law to use for a limited entry draw for elk. I have only used it for deer and am using 165 gr Winchester Ballistic Silvertips. I don't think that would be a very good bullet for elk so I would like anyone's suggestions and or loads for an elk load for it.  I was thinking 180 grain bullet, if you have preferences in bullets and powder, etc. I would love to hear them.

thanks,

Bob

180gr Nosler Partition with your powder of choice.  My powder of choice in three 300WSM rifles is Ramshot Hunter.

I'm running H4350 with 180gr partition at 2930fps, scary accurate and good performance on game.

200gr NP @2800 fps. That's my load for a full sized .300 Winnie. You won't be able to reach that velocity (I don't think) but you can come close.

Mine likes either the 165gr. (for deer), but it also likes the 180 gr. Nosler Accu-bond over H4198. If I were hunting elk, I might look at the Barnes bullets too, they are awesome when pentration is needed.

Pick a controlled expansion type bullet that groups well. If the hunt is in close cover don't overlook RN bullets

You sure you mean H4198 in a 300WSM?  Seems a little fast to me.

You are absolutely correct! It was IMR 4831, not H4198. Just goes to show you to always reference a few manuals!  Thanks for catching this.  I still like the Accu-Bonds and Barnes TSX bullets, though.

Have you guys visited the WSSMZone forum? My brothers & I have 5 WSM's or WSSM's, but none of them are .300WSM.Lotsa helpful folks over there, that are dedicated to these special calibers.Just getting my loading bench back together & I've learned a lot there.
