I believe I was in a similar spot a few years ago.  In my case I had an eTrex Legend that shares the same serial port cable at the rest of the early eTrex series.  The problem I had was my new laptop did not have a serial port.  But had four of the faster USB ports.

I purchased an USB 2.0 to Serial Adapter cable.  The setup cost me about $20.00.  I have done business with this outfit for years without a problem.  A check on e-bay will identify other sources at lower prices.

The adapter I purchased came with a small CD with drivers so the computer would recognize the adapter.

The software that comes with it is critical to success.
