First range trip with Marlin 1895GS?

Took my new to me guild gun to the range, yesterday. Rainy, windy but, just had to shoot this thing. With the rear sight elevator in the next to the bottom notch looks to me like it's hitting 12" high at 100 yards? Is this the norm for these guns? Is this why so many have gone to peep sights on them?  Shot off sand bags in the Illinois constant wind and rain. I always thought of a Guide Gun as a short range stopping rifle but, with the rear sight so low, still 12" high?
Ammo was Remington 300 grainers.
How much does elevation change with one notch of the rear sight elevator movement?
Groups were exceptable for a iron sighted rifle, for my practical purpose.
Has anyone ever benched one of these, straight out of the box, to see what they will do, before beginning to customizing them?

That is exactly the same thing that I encountered. I scoped mine and am trying to figure out which replacement front will cure my ill.

Yep.

Some of the best 100 meter three and five shot groups with various handloads: 2.2", 2.6", 1.3", 1.6", 1.7", 2.3". The absolute worst I have logged have been 4", but not many of those. This gun seems to shoot most loads quite well. I have shot the gun with a 1-4x20 Leupold and a 2-7x32 Nikon. Vihtavuori powders, N130, N133, N135. Sierra 300 gr JHP, Remington 405 gr JSP, Speer 400 gr FN.

sasu, accuracy isn't the problem. Did you read my post? Gun is shooting high at 100 yards, with rear sight almost all the way down, is the problem. Why did you interject the accuracy of your gun?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I have never shot mine with the iron sights. What I know is, this gun has a lot of vertical point of impact variation between different loads, probably because of the light weight, stock geometry, heavy recoil and slow bullets. With heavier loads even the way the shooter holds the rifle can have a noticeable effect on the point of impact.
