Accubond vs. Partition for Elk
« on: June 10, 2008, 06:46:45 AM »
I spoke with Nosler today and the guy said it is six's for elk if I use their Accubond bullet versus their Partition. They said it has plenty of penetration for elk and is more modern than the partition-meaning it is one lead piece in it versus 2 in the partition and it has a boat tail. I would like your opinion on this matter.

Thanks,

Bob

I'm a known commodity type person I'm sticking with the Partition. What is the Accubond promising that the Partition hasn't been delivering? For me the accuracy issue is probably irrelivant at my realistic hunting ranges (150yd clear shot relativly rare, never pulled a trigger past 300 even on range)

As I understand it the Accubond is less likely to lose lead whenit expands. Under the right conditions the partition bullet can lose its forward lead. I have never seen it go completely but my experience is that the partition does shed some of the front lead. I have never had a problem with the bullets terminal ballistics though so I use them.

From what I've read on the partition, it was designed to lose the front part, secondary projectiles and more damage.  Have only taken mule deer with the accubond so far, but have heard others who have taken elk with them and it was meat in the freezer with no bullet recovered.  DP.

I can relate to front of Partition detonating, close shots give me a wound channel like a double tap Ballistic tip / solid. As range increases the bullet does stay together much better, less lead to eat!

I have used NP's way back when they were made from a solid rod that got drilled out on both ends and the front was turned down by a lathe. I have also used the modern types. If I recovered any of them and there weren't many, the lead in front was gone with a bit of a flap of jacket material curled back. I never used the Accubond so I have no opinion. I did use Speer Mag Tip's and their Hot Cor. Both they held up well, no seperation of core or jacket. That 200 gr SP is awesome. Great ballistics for long range and full penetration at close range on moose. Never did hunt elk.

I have never used the accubond so I cannot speak on it.

I have however used the partition. I live outside Bend OR (20 minute drive from the Nosler plant) and buy all my bullets at thier pro shop.

I have taken several deer and a couple elk with partitions. Never once have I had issues with terminal preformance. The partition's design is such that it does loose some of the forward lead. One just has to realize that we are talking about a bullet that was state of the art when Core lokts were the standard, it is no longer "the new thing".  When it was designed the claim that a bullet would retain over 70% (or whatever the number is) of its wieght after impact drew a lot of attention. I have recovered 4 partions from game. All were from elk, just under the hide on the oppesite side of entry. Three were perfectly mushroomed and did their job like they are supposed to, a third hit a major bone and bad things happened to the front of the bulllet but it still did its job and the base of the bullet held together like it was suposed to. I will continue using them. They have never failed me and I doubt they will and I can buy them cheaper than any other bullet.  If I do ever switch hunting bullets it will be to Barnes tripple shock, not to the acccubond, but who knows I may be missing the boat.

If I could get Partitions cheaper than any other bullet, I would think I was dreaming!  They have taken a big price jump around here in the last year.  Along with every other bullet :(  DP.

Both will work on elk with the proper cartridge, but then so will a Remington Cor Lokt .
