While not the best choice for defense against bear, the 45 still seems to work.

If you know anything about mushroom picking out west here you will know he wasn't carrying a 45 to protect himself from Bears, and it sure wasn't the first time he carried one picking.  Hunting Morels is a highly "competitive" activity.  Larry
