  Let's just hope that if gas ever comes down to liveable prices again, we Americans don't become complacent, and decide....
  "Well, I guess all the hub-bub about drilling and a comprehensive energy plan was nothing we should be concerned about..no need to be in a rush !!"

   If we do that (for the umpteenth time), OPEC will give us a short "breather"..then tighten the screws again..

   Remember, politicians, especially Congress..need pressure from the voters, if they are to respond..we've seen it all before, haven't we !
I agree 1,000%!!!!!!!!! Even if it does come down we still need to find more fuel efficient ways of transportation. Dale

 I'm with ironglow on that, once it hits the 3 buck mark or close, all the pressure to start drilling etc will fade away, at least 'til next time. :(

Well guys crude oil dropped to $118.44 a barrel today. Some are saying it could drop below $100.00 a barrel in the next few weeks. It looks like $3.00 a gallon gas may happen after all. Dale

Hopefully  it will drop to $2.00 a gallon.
Boy I would be tickeled if that were to happen!!!!!!!!!!! I am just hopping for at least $3.00 a gallon again. If it got down to $2.50 I think I would throw a party. Dale

It looks like its heading in that direction. If it keeps going, it  might end up being a $1.00 a gallion. We just have to keep praying and hopeing.

I am not sure there is enough prayer in the whole world to bring it down to a $1.00 a gallon. I sure like your thinking though!!!!!!! :o ;D ;) Dale

  Sheila;
  On the other hand, if the price stays up enough to keep the folks on Congress' tail..it could prove a boon to the coal mines and new technology may be
   funded to reinvigorate those old oil wells ! I can attest that there are good folks all over PA that deserve the good jobs such a comprehensive energy plan
  would bring to beautiful central PA..or all of PA , for that matter..

I figured the high fuel prices would backfire on those dimwits in congress.  I think there are oil feilds here in Pennsylvania. If we drill for our own oil here in Pennsylvania, we wouldn't need to get it from another state, that way, it help lower the gas prices here in Pennsylvania. Same goes with the other states, you find oil there, use it in that state.

I am not sure how that works. I think all drilled oil in the world has to go on the world market. I would hope someone that knows about these type of things would try to explain it better to me. Dale

Oh by the way. On my way home from work I paid $3.69 for gas. That is 30 cents less than it was a few weeks ago but still way to much. I used $55.00 worth of gas just today going to and from work with some running around for work just today. It hurts bad and I really would be tickeled if it went back down to at least $2.50 a gallon again. Dale

Dale;
  If this Congress that is powerful enough to shut down in the face of almost half the Congress and most of the people being in opposition;
  They should be powerful enough to assure that most our own natural resources stay here....although that wouldn't be necessary..

  Our simply having our fingers on the spigot could overcome OPEC's much abused monopoly..

Boy I have to say when I started this thread back in June that I would never see $3.00 a gallon gas again. I am happy to report that gas here is now $2.29. Last night on the news they reported a station around Pittsburgh selling it for $1.89. I never would have in my wildest dreams thought it could go below $2.00. Dale

I wouldn't count on the price of gas to remain lower.  Here's what the environmentalists and Obama are proposing.  It is the confidence in cheaper fuel that makes the commodity market in oil prices drop.  If Obama and his henchmen have their way, the fuel costs must go up, if he overturns the domestic drilling for oil in the US.  And that is just what is being proposed.

Obama Moving to Halt Oil Drilling
Monday, November 10, 2008 7:10 PM

WASHINGTON — Environmentalists on Monday applauded an announcement that U.S. President-Elect Barack Obama would consider curtailing oil and gas drilling in some areas, and expressed hope future energy policy decisions would contain more environmental protections.

The co-chair of Obama's transition team, John Podesta, said on Sunday that Obama probably would reverse an executive order by President George W. Bush allowing drilling in fragile lands in Utah.

Mike Daulton, legislative director of the National Audubon Society, said reversing the order would be a promising step away from the Bush administration's energy policy, which he called too slanted toward the oil industry.

"The Bush Administration's policies on drilling should be looked at line by line and there should be fundamental change," Daulton said.

Environmental groups urged Obama to reconsider allowing drilling in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas off Alaska's coast, home to whales, polar bears and other Artic animals. They also said they hoped Obama will restrict development in certain lands open to drilling in New Mexico and Colorado.

Dave Alberswerth, senior policy advisor at the Wilderness Society, said even if Obama does not issue executive orders reversing Bush policies, his administration could choose not to issue leases in certain areas or issue leases with restrictions.

"Given the fact that there's this huge inventory of leased but undeveloped lands, you don't need to rush into opening these sensitive areas to oil and gas development to meet America's energy needs," Alberswerth said.

Environmental groups also said they hoped Obama would revisit Bush's offshore drilling policy.

Bush lifted the executive order banning drilling off U.S. coasts in July and Congress allowed the ban to expire in October. With the moratorium lifted, drilling can technically take place as close as three miles from U.S. coasts. Environmental groups hope Obama will provide more protection for the coasts.

The House of Representatives passed a comprehensive energy bill that allowed offshore drilling 50 miles from the east and west coasts if states permitted it and completely opening areas more than 100 miles from the coast to oil exploration.

"That is a compromise, one would imagine, a new administration would carefully examine," said Daniel Weiss, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.

Members of the oil industry expressed concern about attempts to limit energy exploration on federal lands.

"We are hopeful that the new administration will be thoughtful enough to recognize that it would be a wrong to try and put back some of the drilling moratoria and deny American consumers access to their own oil and natural gas resources," said Karen Matusic, spokeswoman for the American Petroleum Institute.

Matusic called oil and gas production on federal lands essential to meeting America's energy demands and said the oil industry was committed to developing resources in environmentally sensitive way.

Greg, now what would happen if say, a state just started drilling and defyed the Feds? Use the Guard to block access to the feilds a nd drill all they want. Heck let em put up a refinery too. How can the Feds stop them?

Heck I'm glad  was wrong on my post about after the olympics. I'm glad my vote was wrong too.

Who are the troops going to listen to if the Governor orders them to defend the oil fields as their Commander in Chief? If the governor refuses to federalize them, who will they listen to? I'm just throwing this out there, was in the Army not in the Guard, my kids are both in the Guard and I have a feeling they would stand with what the Governor said. I know back when we were in the Army a bunch of us talked about what we would do if we were asked to disarm the populace of America. I don't think too many would have followed orders and I'm very sure many would have committed fratricide on the ones who would try to disarm American citizens.

Well,here is some more info on drilling and alternative energy, which would compete with fossil fuel and resultant price reductions.  If it doesn't happen, the wealth and money that could have been spread in the
US is going to OPEC at a rate of $14,000,000 an HOUR.  Does anyone think that amount of money spread around in the US would improve the economy along with alternative energy sources?  I certainly do.  http://www.newsmax.com/us/energy_fuel_warning/2008/11/11/150045.html

We can hope a lot of them.

The cheapest I've seen is $2.189 and that sure feels nice after it going above $4. I filled up today and it only cost $30 compared to almost $100 not so very long ago.
