750 woodsmaster .35 whelen
« on: June 13, 2008, 11:47:13 AM »
 Hello All,

I am a new member here and have been reading about the problems so many of you have had with your Remington Woodsmasters. I am going to throw out a queery:

I have a 750 Woodsmaster in a .35 Whelen. Great calibre for my neck of the woods. I live in Northern British Columbia, Canada and hunt in a region that is literally crawling with Grizzlies. We have not had any nasty encounters here so far but their population is on the rise and most of us here have concerns for our safety, particularly when dressing game in the field. Moose are the main quarry here and as most of you know they are huge up North.  The Whelen is an excellent calibre for hunting in the dense brush where they browse. My rifle has experienced the same jamming problems most forum members complain of. I am fond of the way the rifle handles, it is the carbine version and would like to get this particular gun working reliably. A gun shot here brings in the bears, they know the drill, scare off the hunter and they get a free meal. I would like to have the quick shots available for protection, of myself and hunting partners first and then to guard the game. My rifle has both ejection jams and will often fail to pick up the next round from the magazine. It is an accurate rifle, no complaints there. I have followed various suggestions for fixes: smoothed, polished, cleaned, oiled etc. I am ready to start snipping coils from the action spring as well. Am I just wasting my time with this gun? I am familiar with the BAR in the .338 win mag and it would certainly do the job but I simply do not shoot as accurately with the added recoil of this round. Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

I had a 742 once that would jam. It had a Metal Clip. The top of the clip was slightly bent inward. In this case, too much. The cartridge would catch and slow the cycle action. I simply bent these outward a little and solved the problem. My Brother had the same problem. I noticed that He wound slam the clip in as if operating a M16. This was bending those top Ears. Bent them back out and solved the problem. Other than that, I would consult with Rem.. Hope this helps

My first rifle was a 742 I bought in 1967. A few years later I started reloading for it (30-06).  I finally realized that moderate loads, using cases sized in a small base die, worked best.  I also check my case lengths after each sizing.  My rifle is very reliable when I follow these rules.

You should try use old style magazine from Rem 7400/742 I've tried it and its working on My Remington 750 carbine .308. I got it out from my 15 year olds Remington 7400. New Mag currently on 750 is abit bigger than old one probably that's why its jamming. If its not working well for you then I'd recommended get new gun.

There's a Rem. sanctioned Smith out near the Plant in Ilion,NY.  I think He goes by White Dog Gun Smithing. He helped Me with a problem that I had with My 742. It was over the phone, and He would not let Me send Him any money. He certainly knew what the fix was. So didn't a local Shop, Who offered Me $50 for the gun. It was a case of 2 actuating arms on The Trigger Mechanism, that can, thru operation, become in the position of the other, which would make the rifle a single shot, non-ejecting / noncycling. I'd try this before You give up and trade. Of course, You could always sell it to Me, and I'll have The Sig. Other turn it over to The Rem. Rep., next time He is in Her Office.

Did you notice the guy was in Canada ? !
Just try to get a rifle across the border these days without a lot of red tape and believe it or not it is worse to go from Canada to the US.

Hopefully there is an authorized Rem facility in Canada that can fix him up. If it can't be done, Marlin makes nifty guns that handle grizzlies ;D

Yeah, I noticed That He was over the border. Thats why I said that this Smith was kind enough to give Me info over the Phone. The last statement was in jest of selling it to Me. By the Way, I read Contracts for as living, You Know, Read every word, Then pick it apart.

While I am on the subject of getting stuff legally over the border I just found out that I can get gas checks and bullet molds but need an export license for scope rings.  :o

I think they are considered to be dangerous military equipment, or something like that. The U.S. export regulations are now a lot tighter than our European import regulations. A funny but annoying situation, as I like to order stuff directly from the U.S.

Thanks all for your replies. Quietly hoping somebody had the proverbial magic bullet! I haven't given up yet but seem to be down to my last options. Mckie, the actuating arms in the trigger assembly were correctly aligned. I bought a very good set of hardened side cutters today and will start snipping coils off the action spring. In between cuts I will fire rounds to gauge the return tension on the spring and with a little luck, who knows, I may be in business. Once agaiin thanks for your replies. Any new ideas would be gladly received.

happy hunting!!!

By the way, it is illegal to export any sighting device or related component out of the USA. It was hell trying to get a weaver 2.5x20 scope and rings for the same .35 whelen up here. I tried several online orders, all were rejected because of my address. I found a way around this in the end. I have family in Seattle that received the order and then forwarded the scope to me here. What a pain though, can you imagine how useless this low power scope would be to anybody with malicious intentions! The law is obviously built with this in mind and was easier to create with a blanket export ban but the good guys suffer too.

happy hunting!

Windskimmer,
I had jamming problems with my 750 rifle in 35 whelen as well.  I tried cleaning, polishing, and 3 different clips.  Nothing helped.  I did not trim the spring coils because I figured you shouldn't have to do that with a brand new gun.  It was accurate and handled great, but I was never confident that it would shoot more than once.  If you are not confident in your weapon you might as well not carry one.  So, I traded it for a Model 700 CDL in 35 whelen.  Much better.

I hear quite a few people saying their 750's are jamming, that's ashame. My $150 pawnshop special 7400 in 30/06 is ready to go from first round to last. I keep all the metal components as slick as glass.

It is indeed a shame. My old 742 in 06 has never jammed either and that with reduced loads as well. I do use a small base Die set, dunno if it makes a difference or not.

Snipping 3 coils off the action spring did the trick! All appears well after 20 rounds of 250 grain ammo. Just need to polish the rough spots out of the chamber and she'll be slicker than snot!

happy hunting all!!!

Unbelievable! Never would have guessed that that would fix it. It still blows my mind why you would need to do that to a new gun.  How much money, time, and ammo did you waste trying to get that gun to shoot?  Remington should be ashamed.  Hopefully it keeps working.  Happy hunting with that 35!
