That's nice to know.  Now I can't hassle my brother.  Last time I hunted in Tennessee the gun had to be .25 cal or larger.  My little brother carried a .243, and hated it when I kept pointing out he was using too small a gun.  I carry a 30-06.

I don't remember it being .25 caliber, but it was .24 caliber for many years.  That doesn't mean it wasn't .25 just I don't remember it....

I hunted a .243 from the late sixties until the proliferation of the internet when I learned a .243 wouldn't kill a deer, and elk required a .338 or bigger.....good thing deer and elk don't surf the net right?

A couple of years ago three important changes occurred.

The muzzle loader was changed from .45 minimum to .40 minimum.

Cross bows became legal to hunt big game with.

Deer and other big game changed from .24 caliber minimum to and center fire rifle.

Other less significant laws......

Use or possession of predator calls illegal at night now illegal.

I don't see the new 2008-2009 hunting guide yet so there may be other changes?

From page 11:

Rifles or handguns loaded with centerfire ammunition are prohibited for all
hunting between 30 minutes after sunset and 30 minutes before sunrise.

From page 12, general hunting regulations:

PROHIBITED ACTS
The use or possession of predator calls while night hunting of any species is prohibited.

Please don't shoot the messenger..... you might want to give your region office a call and ask.

Have a look at prohibited acts here: http://www.state.tn.us/twra/huntweapons.html

No doubt it's a stupid law......

The best time to rid the county side of coyotes is at night.....

I'm having a hard time understanding the logic behind this regulation.........

I have a hard time understanding a lot of the crap that all the state departments put out. TWRA is not as bad as some. I do agree that the nighttime regulations suck.

If I might....

The TWRA commissioners set the law on every thing but coons which is set by the TN legislature.

The commissioners are appointed by the governor and not by popular vote.

The night hunting ban is a result of poaching big game and also because of poor policing policy.

Honestly, hunting and fishing regulations have gotten wayyyyy out of hand.....

The TWRA has gotten fat and arrogant.   The price of licenses reflect that......

Thinking of moving back to Tennessee.  But with the laws on hunting so messed up, I'll probably still go to Texas to hunt whitetail.

Victorcharlie:  When I was growing up in Tennessee the minimum caliber you could use for hunting big game, Deer, Bear, and Boar, was .25 caliber.  Knew lots of people that thought a .243 was good but the state said no.  Anyway was home on leave one year, from Alaska.  My Mom's church choir leader came over to meet me and visit.  Something about this guy just did not hit me right, I took a dislike to him from the very first.  I had my Parker-Haile in .308 with me and was showing it to Dad and my Uncle.  This guy said "Man that's way too much gun for whitetail, kicks too hard".  Then he asked what he could do to stop his bullets from going all the way through whitetails, would a hollow point work better?  He had lost three deer so far that year, bullets were going right through them with out killing them.  They were running off and he could not find them.  I asked what caliber and bullet he was using.  He said "I am shooting an 80gr jacketed bullet out of a Remington model seven in .243".  I looked him in the eye and replied, "First thing you need to do is get a real deer gun, one that's legal".  I handed him a copy of the regs and pointed out the reference to minimum caliber for Deer, being .25.  This guy come unglued, he went to spluttering, every time he went to say something he got so flustered he could not speak.  He kept slapping the page in the reg book with the back of his hand.  He must have paced back and forth across my Dad's den ten times.  Kept turning around and slapping that book.  Finally he stormed out the door without finishing a single sentence he had started.  Jumped into his pickup and threw gravel all the way to the street.  My Dad and Uncle got to laughing so hard they were crying.  My Uncle said "It sounds like he needs to learn how to shoot".  Dad agreed.

Never saw that man again.  He refused to come to Mom and Dad's house if he thought I was there.  Dad told me he quite hunting deer for many years after that.  Mom thinks I am the meanest man alive.

Oh I know a .243 will kill deer with no problems if you do your part.  I've killed many Caribou with one.

The TN deer hunting laws are better than most. Long season and liberal bag limits, what is not to like?

Liberal bag limits do not apply to unit B. I can take 2 bucks and 1 doe, but the doe is only during the first 4 days of MZ season. We are doe poor here. Not uncommon to see 15 to 20 does at a time. Bucks are like hens teeth. ::)

The price of the license for one.  Actually, 4 licenses required to hunt the whole season, or at least 3.  Small game and fishing, then you need and Archery, plus a Muzzle loader, plus a gun license.  Want to hunt WMA's?  Need a permit.

Tennessee has the highest resident hunting and fishing license fees in the lower 48.

Seasons in most WMA's are very, very short, and alot require a draw.

"any centerfire round can be used on deer in tn.according to last years rules 07-08."

That's too bad.  I always thought keeping all centerfire .22s out of the deer woods was a great idea.

"The muzzle loader was changed from .45 minimum to .40 minimum."

It should have been changed to .50 minimum.

I get the sportsman's license for $136 a year. This covers all but duck/migratory bird stamps and allows free entry to quota hunts. I am not a rich man but that works out to less than $2.50 a week. That is like one beer at the bar. I would have to say that after looking at other States big game seasons, we are pretty well off, even KY only allows 2 weeks for deer/gun.
Unlike some other States, TWRA is completely financed by license sales.

I agree on the sucky night hunting regs and WMA's are far too restrictive. I like to Coyote hunt and am limited to hunting only when something else is in season, using the appropriate weapon. The whole WMA thing could be revised but still, $2.50 for all my hunting/fishing needs isn't bad IMHO.
