Dry firing rimfires?

I have a Ruger 10/22 and I'm wondering if it's safe to dry fire these rifles, or will it harm the firing pin, action, hammer, etc.?  I just want to dry fire so I can used to the poor trigger that these come with from the factory, I'll get some Volquartsen parts later to clean it up, but until then I want to practice at home.

Dry fire the rifle.  It is good practice.  But, you have to know it can damage the breechface of the rifle where the firing pin hits it.  If it is damaged a gunsmith can fix it cheaply.  I have dry fired my 10-22 many thousands of times.

I don't know about the 10-22, but I broke the firing pin in my BL-22 by dry firing.  The new pin was only $30, but it p@##ed my off somthin fierce.  I'll never dry fire a rimfire again.

How is the 10/22 different that allows it to be dryfired without damage?

Not a good thing to dry fire any rimfire in my experience. Usually the firing pin isnt the problem, its where the pin hits the breech face and makes a dent.

Neworleans cop. I believe that Ruger has a firing pin stop incorporated into the system to prevent barrel and firing pin damage. When I dry fire my 10/22 I place a shim between the barrel and the bolt. You can use an old credit card or a doubled up index card. If you go to thick the the firing pin won't go off. Its just needed on the edge to back the bolt up just a tad. Hope this helps

I use a 22 rim fire snap cap.  Found them at a gunshow.

I made snaps out of 22 mags by pulling the bullets, and glueing them in later.  I use paint on the bullet to make them obvious, though the mangled rims identify them.

Dry firing was punching a divot into the breach face, with obvious results.  The repair was easy, but it convinced me to make the snaps.

Mine is a 96/22M, with opposing claw extractors:  Never a problem.

You can dry fire Kimber of America 22's with no damage being done.
