Mauser 1871/84 Stock and Parts
« on: June 16, 2008, 06:12:56 AM »
anyone out there buy one of those stripped action with the broken stock $15.00 Mauser 1871/84 from Southern Ohio Guns?  I am looking for the forward half of one of those in decent shape or repairable shape to flesh out a carbine length stock I have to full length.

Also looking for bolt parts or a complete bolt, and Magazine follower, or a photo and specs of the follower.

Cobbling one together out of a fairly decently bored barrel that is pretty ugly outside.

Dave:  First I would check withone of our sponsors, MidSouth Supply, to see if they have naything like that or have any links to old mil-surps parts places.  Failing any luck there I would try SAMCO, SARCO, or Gun Parts Corp.  Sometimes these folks have stuff youcan't really imagine.  HTH.  Mikey.

I'll wish you luck on your search :).  I've got a similar gun - a Gewyr 88 that I picked up for $19 from some online company (can't remember which one).  It was very dirty, missing, it's bolt, and a trigger guard screw, and fairly banged up.  Still, there didn't seem to be any serious problems with it.  I cleaned it up as best I could (had to take this one outisde - a ton of gunk came out of it).  I also managed to replace the triggerguard screw and found a bolt for it, but the bolt was missing the bolt head.  If I can find that, assuming that the headspace is within safe limits, then the rifle should be in complete condition.  Though, even if the headspace checked out, I'd probably sandbag this one for a few shots before I shot it myself.

I'm getting there...found a parts rifle for $170 which has gotten me to the point where all I need is the forward part of the stock (I have another stock that was cut off forward and AFT but I'm not sure whether there's enough forearm to rebuild it....and I need the forward Barrel band. Although I have fashioned a bolt stop washer (crude) and made from the top of a 1/2 -13 Acorn nut and a 6mm flat head single slop screw (original I believe was a round head 1/4-28 screw). So it's getting to the point where It' going to be shootable. The cartridge lifter is functioning properly so YEAH!!!.   Oh, and I need a flat spring for the main sight, which I can probably fashion out of Spring stock.

I found a very serviceable 1888 for less than $240.00 with all the parts there, so I am pleased. I've always wanted one and except for the stock being really really black and dinged up beyond all comprehension, it functions properly.
