Cannon shoots in the West: Where and when?
« on: June 16, 2008, 06:43:19 AM »
Is there a list of cannon shoots somewhere? I know there are quite a few cannoneers out here on the West Coast. There used to be a Labor Day shoot in the Oregon desert at Hole in the Ground, and a shoot at the Sportsman Park in Grants Pass, Ore., but the latter is no longer held. I'd like to attend a shoot and talk to some cannoneers about their guns, if I can arrange a bank loan to finance gasoline expenses ...

Well, duh! There's the sticky right up near the top of the forum, and I see there is a shoot this weekend in my old stomping grounds in Humboldt County.

Come on down and join in the fun. The more, the merrier. During the summer shoots we have been averaging 20-30 guns on the firing line. I'm sure we can find room for yours.

49er: I don't have a cannon, just want to see some of the other guys' toys for inspiration. How long do you think the fellas will be firing their guns on Saturday? I have to work Friday night until 11, so would have to drive down from Southern Oregon on Saturday morning if I decide to go.

Competition starts at 11 a.m. and after the first 5 shots, there is a break for lunch around 12:30-1 and then the final 5 shots. Scoring and then awards ceremony follow. Competition should be over around
3 or 4. Some people will packup and leave and some will continue to shoot for the fun of it. So far
there about 12 guns on the line. Someone was supposed to bring a 45-70 gatling gun but
couldn't make it. Maybe next year. I'll update until the shoot.

As of 8 p.m. last night there were 21 guns on the firing line and at least 5 more rifled guns are
expected today and possible 3 more mortars. Two of the mortars are bowling ball mortars. There are
2 or 3 cannon makers on site as well. It is shaping up to be a good shoot. Hope to see you there.

As of 8 p.m. this evening there were 30 guns on the line including 2 full size Napoleons. It was beginning to rain and there was thunder and lightning. I was having too much fun getting my beercan
mortar on target and watching everyone else that I didn't think to take pictures. I'll take a bunch
tomorrow if the weather cooperates. It's no fun shooting in the rain.   :( :(
