1000yd shooting
« on: June 16, 2008, 02:59:55 PM »
Hello everyone. im in the process of purchasing a rem700 .308 sps varmint lh. I would really like to get good at shooting targets 600-1000yds. I dont reload yet but im guessing im going to need too. I have talked to a few people  and this is what they have suggested.

As far as a scope, mounts, and bases im going with valdada/IOR 20moa  base,  2.5x10x42 tactical 30mm scope and 30mm heavy duty rings.

I want to buy a rangefinder but im not sure what brand to buy. i want a good one and something that will last. any suggestions?

Also do you guys think i need a balistics program like perrysystems?

Is it really worth reloading ammo? Someone told by the time you reload good quality ammo its just as expensive as buying factory ammo.

As far as the gun and optics go, just get the best you can.  There are more and more scopes out there that have over 100MOA of vertical adjustment in them and one of those would save you from having to buy a special mount.

I use the sierra ballistics program and that gets me pretty close.  What works for me is to shoot and take good notes, and write down exactly what adjustments I needed.

Reloading isn't cheap to get into, but when you do get started you can save half of what it would cost to buy the cheap stuff and you can save about 2/3 of what it would cost to buy the expensive stuff.  Reloading is definately something that takes time, but you'l enjoy it too.

More than just saving money, reloading is about tailoring a load to your specific rifle.

My son regularly shoots out to 1000 yards. He has Badger ordinance rings and bases and an ungodly expensive Leupold scopes with 30 mm tubes, target knobs, side focus and mil dots. He handloads all of his ammunition, starting with virgin Winchester brass, and is very good at what he does.....He can shoot way better than I can. For now.

A .308 Win. is not the best thing at 1000. The 172 gr. match ammo slows to subsonic around 880 yds. or so. There is potential for slight bullet upset when it slows below the speed of sound.  Even the 30-06 is not the best any more. Now it seems the 6.5 mm in a couple different loads works best. David Tubbs is one of the very best long range shooters & he also likes the 6mm stuff. Better B.C. & very consistant, which is what wins at 1000. F-Class shooters specialize in 600-1000 & can help you out in your quest.

It all depends on what you want to do when you hit the target at 1000.  For me, I just want to practice with my hunting rifle and if I can tell I hit the target that's all I need.  Savage has their new F class rifles chambered in 308, 6.5 x 284 NORMA, and 6 Norma BR but those all have 30" barrels.  I don't know anything about the 6mm guns other than they are quite popular now.  If you can handle the recoil or have one build the 338 Lapua is another big name caliber in target shooting.  Those big heavy bullets don't get pushed around as much in the wind from what I've heard.

No reason to have a caliber that pounds the snot out of you.

Exactly why I'll probably never have anything bigger than my 30-06.  I had a short lived love afair with a 300RUM and that was the end of the huge guns for me.

I don't shoot in competition but I do like longrange shooting.
I broke down and bought a Leica rangefinder it will range rocks, trees out to 1200yds
if you can hold it steady. It will range deer and antelope to 800yds with no problem
It ranges to 1200yds almost instantly on houses and reflective stuff.
I just put Burris signature rings on my 300SAUM with the .020"offset rings and I have enough
adjustment to shoot to over 1200yds, haven't found a GOOD place to shoot that far but I can
scare the heck out of rocks at that range :D

308 isnt the best choice for 1000yds.

I shoot F-Class and i shoot a .260 rem custom built on a 40x action.

As far has handloading......nearly a must.

Optics are gonna be expensive simple as that. Good rule of thumb all fclass shooters use....You need to have enough elevation adjustment to hit 30" high at 100yds....That will be close to 1000yds.

I use my calulator to get a good zero so i can be on the paper come this weekend.
I can only shoot 800yds at my house. So i set up 49.2" high at 800yds, and if all goes well, i will hit the paper with my sighter :)

WOW! 3300 to 3400 FPS with a 142 grain bullet out a 260 rem? You must have one heck of a long barrel. No dought the 260 is a fine caliber but I have never seen loads or the 264 win mag generate these kind of velocities.

Lyman Reloading book states about 2800 fps max with a 142 gr HPBT & 24" barrel. IIRC you can expect 50fps per inch, so you might get 3100fps from a 30" barrel

I would buy some match grade ammo from federal or remington and use there free download software.
You might be surprized how often you hit.
You can work up to all that other stuff later in your search for perfection.

BTW Reloading good quality ammo is cheaper.
It's reloading cheaper than cheap ammo that is tough.

Slickest, I have shot several matches at 600yds. with a Rem.700 VSSF 308 In won. I had to come up with a load that worked so I feel reloading is a must. Black hills shots the best for stock ammo. Scopes, I like Leupold 1/8moa and a fine duplex the dot will blow you out  moa at that distance. Get a real good spotting scope learn to read mirage and trigger control.I have played around with it at 1000yds. it did ok 3ft. groups I like 300mag or  300rum at 1000yds. I can hold 1ft.group. If  in when time gets better I just might build a 6.5 . If you ever get the chance to go Perry do so or read anything from Tubbs do so. Have fun and shot shot shot.

The advantage in reloading is not about cost, it is about getting loads that get the best out of your barrel.
I shot the 190 gr. sierra match king in Palma matches in my .308, and was very happy with it.
There wasn't a factory load available that  offered the accuracy that handloads offered.

At least when I started reloading, it was all about saving money.  Now, 6 years later, it's still nice to save money, but it's more about making my own ammo that outshoots the factory ammo.

Right now I can reload match grade ammo for what it costs to buy cheapo factory stuff.  I make ammo that's the right fit for my rifle and it's very rewarding.

260 Remington can't come close to achieving that.

Hey Mike,

I thought that Palma matches had ammo restrictions?  155 gr. bullets if I recall.

Jim is correct Sierra 308 155 gr. was mandated until recently. Barrels of 30"-34" are common for Palma shooting

If your goal is building a 1000 yard target rifle, then you should look at what is most common in f-class shooting.

Scopes tend to be the Nightforce NXS first, followed by the Nightforce BR models second.   Most use the 8-32x or 12-42x models.   There are all sorts of bases,,, Badger Ordnance makes good quality picatinny bases that drop right on Remington 700's.   Badger also makes a 22 moa stub rail that can drop on a zero moa picatinny rail. Badger rings are also very good pieces.

The 308 Winchester can do fine at 1000 yards and keeps you in ftr class rather than open class if you decide to shoot f-class matches.  In FTR class, rifles are restricted to 223 Remington or 308 Winchester and 18.18 lbs including the weight of the bipod.

Since you are not reloading, you are going to be using 175 grain loaded ammo for 1000 yard work (thats what it was created for).   Black Hills or Federal match ammo is what people use restricted to factory loaded ammo.

If you decide to reload, the Lapua 155 scenar bullet has a .504 BC which is better than the Sierra 175 Matchking.  A 308 with the 155 Scenar can do very well at 1000 yards.

A 260 Remington with 142 Sierras at 3320 fps....hmmmm,,, 6.5-284 shooters dont run that hot with the 142.   You will not gain 300 fps by adding 6 inches of barrel from 24 to 30 inches.   You may loose 300 fps going from 24 inches to 18 inches, but in a 308 sized case, the powder is heavily consumed in 24 inches.
