That quote came from Col. Townsend Whelen, the Dean of American Riflemen.

My new Ruger M77 Hawkeye Alaskan 375 Ruger is very accurate, I could not wish for more.

The gun.

Some 75 meter groups shot while testing handloads (300 RN Hornady and 250 SBT Sierra with N140). The measure in the photos is in centimeters so we are talking 1 MOA here.

The next week I shot a 100 meter group to check scope adjustments for hunting and shot into about an inch, i.e. one MOA.

Seriously considering a stainless Hawkeye .30-06----I really like the stainless Browning X-bolt---just not sure it worth the $320 difference--actually more than that--add another $100 for rings and bases. So more like a $400 difference.

As far as I know, all the .350 Remington Mags that went through were pretty good shooters. Sometimes a lot, or caliber runs that way, and that was true with the .350's.

Edit: Hmm, guess I already said this in an earlier post..... sorry.

30 yards? If they were 100 yard groups that would be accurate.

I only just saw this post today, but I have to say I have experienced good and bad from both company's rifles. The Rugers I own have been prettty accurate to date. I have a 10/22 and a 77/22 that will both stay under 1.5" at 100 with cheap bulk Federal ammo. I have 2 #1's, a .22 hornet, and a .218 Bee, and they both have been doing very well, still working on load development, but 1.25" at 100 has been easy if I stay away from max loads. I've shot numerous groups under 1", they have been consistent if I keep away from max loads. I hope lil gun will help that. My dad on the other hand has been snake bit by Ruger. 3 guns, none would shoot, a #3 in .22 hornet, an older 77 in 220 Swift, and a 77/22 Hornet stinless model. The last hornet has killed alot of p-dogs, but consistently staying under an inch it cannot do. Throws alot of flyers. The other 2 had no consistency at all, 3-4" groups were very common, and the best load in the 220 swift might make 2" consistently. Between me and my dad we also have numerous handguns. I have a Single six and a mark 2 semi, he has a Bearcat, 357 blackhawk, 45 Blackhawk, and a mark 2 semi, and they have all performed very well.
We also have numerous remingtons from .17 to 300 Win mag. Most but not all have been very good shooters. The 17's have been the worst of the lot, consistent 1" groups are very hard to get, 1.5=2" is more the norm, even on windless days. I have seen several others that were not great shooters as well. One he ordered for a friend the bolt froze on the first shot, and the bolt handle broke off when trying to open it. Had to be sent back for replacement. I think the Remington offers the best factory action for custom work though. My dad has built several silhouette rifles on 700's in 7-08 and 7mm IMSHA( my personal silhouette rifle was a factory varmint 7-08), and those guns would shoot under 4" groups at 500 meters with astounding regularity.
I personally like Rugers, and will continue to buy them, my dad has given up on them. But having seen both sides of the fence, I still believe it is luck of the draw when buying factory rifles. Some are great, some are not, most are useable, some are junk(even some remingtons.). One last comment though, the only guns that I have never personally seen one that is a poor shooter are Savages and Tikkas. Admittedly, I have seen way fewer of these than the others, but I have yet to see one of them that wouldn't shoot under an inch. JMHO, Billy

I have a Ruger MKII ultra light (RL) in .308 Win. It's a skinny barrel, but I shot 4 groups at 100 yds on Monday that were under 3/4" (3 shot groups) with two different loads using Remington bulk pack 150rn, and the Hornady 165 spire point interloc. One thing to watch on the Ruger rifles is that when the barrel channel is inletted they go up one side of the channel, and down the other with a slightly undersized cutter. (that allows for resharpening of the cutter) Sometimes the process leaves a little bump in the middle of the channel that the barrel will move back, and forth on causing larger than expected groups. A quick way to check for that is to move the barrel side to side in the channel with your hand, if you hear a squeaking sound, or feel hesitation, it's worth taking a look for the tell tale shiny spot in the channel just behind the forend tip. A couple of quick strokes with a fine half round file, or sandpaper on a dowel will fix it pretty quickly..

I have had two ruger m77 rifles, one tang in 270, one three position in 7MM Mag.  Both can put 5 shots in one hole with the right load and good shooter.  it does take a while to get the right load made up sometimes, but I have had them for 20 yrs and been happy so far.  The proof in the pudding is this antelope season, 450 yds one shot one kill.

ok lets see i have four m77 mkII. and one number 1. 1. m77 mkII 25-06 shoots 5/8in at 100yrds timmney trigger is the only thing done to it 2. m77 mkII target 25-06 shoots sub 1/4in. straight out of the box 3. m77 mkII .223 sub 1/4 inch out of the box. 4. m77 mkII rsi .308 1in out of the box. and the no 1. rsi is a 30-06 shoots 3/4in at a hundred yards. all of our rugers have shot moa except one which shot 1.5 at 100 yrds it was a 6.5x55. from my experience if your get one that dont shoot it wont shoot. we spent months on the 6.5 and just couldnt do it. i feel that the common misconception of the remmy being more accurate stems to benchrest shooting. i feel this is soley due to the fact that more aftermarket accurising gizmos are avalible for the remmy. you dont hear about a ruger action because its a mauser action and i dont think anyone can bad mouth a mauser. if you sink 5grand into a ruger and 5grand into a remmy you aint going to see a nickles worth of difference. all i know is i will put my 25-06 deer rifle to anyones remmy deer rifle. im not saying the ruger is better or not but i know which ones sit in my safe and which one i pick up when seasons starts. i love my rugers rifles pistols you name it. just my opinion ;D

It is the old Chevy vs. Ford vs Dodge story.  It is just a matter of preference.  You can get a clunker from any manufacturer.  I firmly believe much has to do with the man behind the machine and also how old the tooling is that made your rifle.

I will say one thing about a 10/22 carbine (used) that I recently bought.  It shot fair at first.  I did a simple free float of the barrel and minimum trigger work and it is a tack driver.  I was going to trick it out with new stock, barrel, trigger etc.  Glad I did not.

Did the one you bought have a barrel band? How do you free float with that on there. I've never been very happy with the way mine shoots, but it is one rifle that I'll have till I die.

I have had more trouble getting later model 70 Win. to shoot than anything.  My feeling is that Ruger could fix about half of their poor shooting rifles with a trigger job.  Some are so bad that nobody could shoot a group with them, and they are easy to fix.  My favorite using rifle is a beat up MkII 7x57 that has killed everything from kudu in Namibia to elk in Wyoming and a trailer load of whitetails.  It is a solid everyday .6-.7 rifle with several loads.

i agree all a mkII needs is a trigger job. i opted for the drop in timney. at least ruger gave the hawkeye a adjustable. my 25-06 will always be just that, mine! ;)

First thing I had done to my MkII "Bob" was a new trigger.  The factory job was just terrible!  ::)  It still doesn't shoot as well as I'd like but then I haven't done any of the things I normally do to a bolt gun to tune it.  It does act like it wants to shoot though.   :-\  Maybe this year I'll get time to play with it.   So many projects, so little time... :)
