« on: June 18, 2008, 02:06:15 AM »
I would like to use the 225 gr. 45 cal. speer bullet in my 45 LC. Does anyone out there have some data for this bullet ? I have on hand HS6 and HS7 and Hod.2400 powder. I would like a load around 1100 to 1200 FPS. In a Ruger blackhawk. THANKS LOTS . Zacharoo

Unless your gun is a Ruger or Contender maximum loads will top out between 900 and 1000 fps.
11.8 grains of HS-6 as Max
HS-7 is not recommended at this pressure and bullet weight.
2400 is not recommended at this pressure and bullet weight.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

..............and Speer recommends a magnum primer with HS-6.

First off, 2400 is not a Hodgon product, it is marketed by Alliant.
Since Speer lists Ruger data for your bullet with 2400 powder, no problem there.
HS-7 is discontinued, that is why no current data is found.  It is a very appropriate powder for Ruger level loads.

225 HP:
Start - 17.0/2400/standard primer...13.0/HS-6/mag primer
Max - 19.0/2400/standard primer....14.0/HS-6/mag primer

I used to use this bullet in my  4.625" RBH for Kodiak deer in the early 1990s.  Over a near-max load of HS-7 (yes, Speer listed data for this bullet/powder combo in their #11 Manual) it killed very well on lung shots out to 50 yards.

You are right about the 2400 powder. The reason I asked about HS7 is thar a friend that reloaded 20 guage shot gun gave me a few pounds when he quit reloading. That is why I would like some data for this bullet with HS7. Thanks. Zacharoo

Lonestar! Do you still have that data for the HS7 powder?  I would like to have it . Do you have to have mag. primers? I use cci and Win. LPP. Zacharoo

Realize that this is obsolete data, but since HS-7 has been discontinued it is not posible to find current data for it.  From Speer #11, 1987 copywrite:

225HP/16.5/HS-7/CCI350 = 1274 fps in 7.5" RBH - MAX LOAD

The Speer starting load is 15.0 grains HS-7.  I used 16 grains in my short-barreled RBH with this bullet but never chronographed it.
