30/06 to .35 Whelen?
« on: June 18, 2008, 01:33:06 PM »
Just wondering if anybody has reamed their 30/06 to a .35 Whelen. I have been thinking about it often since they are such a rare find.

If you want the best return on your $300+ rebore job, I'd recommend doing it to a 26" .25-06 or .280 barrel for the extra 4" of barrel, I get ~100fps more velocity out of the same load of RL15 under the 225gr TSX as MattParliament does in a 22" Handi, right at 2900fps.  ;)

I had two 30/06's converted to .35 Whelen. The first one, a 700ADL Remington, I had "re-bored" by the "late"  Mr. Nickles in Washington state. It was satisfactory, but as noted, not particularly fast with it's 22" BBL. I later sold it. The second one was a Mark X action on a "cheap" synthetic stock that I refinished and "deadened" with foam filler. Instead of having the barrel re-bored, I had a new "Shaw" sporter weight barrel put on and cut to 23.6" (a European length that suits me) with a "target crown". This convertion didn't cost much more than the first. One thing I had to have remedied after the convertion was "headspace", the original gunsmith created too long of chamber that occasionally caused a misfire at inopportune times (probably used the "go-no go gages" without taking the "claw" off the bolt). Once headspace was corrected, it has become one of my favorite "bolt guns". Mine has a 1:14 twist and shoots most bullets from 200gr through 250gr to within 2" of each other at 100yards in a nice tight group for each. The .35 Whelen is probably more power than is really needed for deer, but it sure "smacks them down" and can be loaded up near .338 velocities with 225gr and loaded down to .35 Rem. velocities while maintaining good accuracy. Shooting .357 pistol bullets is just "icing on the cake" during these high "metal priced" times. Just do it, I think you will be happy with the results!

You might just keep checking around.  I saw a new 35 Whelen in Shiptons and they might still have it.  PM me and I will look for you, they are having a 5% off all firearms now too.  DP.

I at one time had three .35 Whelens.  One NEF from the RMEF run, One .35 Whelen  Barrel for my TCR.  And a Mauser action that I had Shaw barrel for me, with an 18" barrel.  I hand load so I use a fast burning powder for it.  The mauser I put in a Bell & Carlson stock, had it Parkerized, and a Williams peep site.  With no scope to get wet, and the short overall length if is real handy on the boat, on a 4-wheeler, and in the track rig.  Unfortunately the wife found it, shot it, and commandeered it.  So now I only have two .35 Whelens, both are single shots.

That's what I've spent on the 338-06 A-Square and 405 Winchester, you might find someone to do it for less, but I wouldn't count on it being as good as Wayne's work, $300 includes chamber work, he charges $250 for just the rebore.

$300 for a rebore and a chamber job is a reasonable price, not that I would ever waste my money on a 35 Whelen, but a 338-06 would be more to my liking.
