AR- 22 conversion kits. How good are they?
« on: June 20, 2008, 04:21:29 AM »
Dear Guys,

I don't own an AR, but I see many people recommending an AR in .223, plus a .22LR  conversion kit, as a one rifle option.  I have seen ads for the conversion kits, but I wonder, . . . just how good are they?

Accuracy:  Assuming the AR is accurate to begin with, does the conversion kit allow you to accurately fire the .22 LR out to 50 yards or so?   Or, is it a sloppy arrangment that gives you 4 inch groups at 50?   (A .22 LR is not much good at all unless it is very accurate out to 50.)

Reliability: Do the conversion kits cycle reliably?  Or are they a hit and miss affair?.

Doesall of this depend on whether the AR itself is Colt, Bushmaster, or other brand etc?

Thanks, Mannyrock

Never owned one, but I was told not to get one.  The bore of a 223 vs a 22 LR are different and they aren't very accurate.  Probably still lots of fun, but the folks I talked to were disappointed.  Good luck. bg

A Tactical Solutions upper is what I have and it is very accurate.  It isn't a conversion, but a dedicated upper for the AR.  Not as cheap as a conversion but you don't have the problems either.

The conversions will get you about the accuracy of a stock 10-22 or about 1" groups at 50 yards. Not great but good enough to justify the $150 price tag to shoot. I have the ciener kit. It functions well even with 60 gr sniper sub sonic. One downfall is the black deposits the dirty little lr leaves, but this is easily cured with a good cleaning.

I have also considered the diff in bore size.
I understand it's .001", which is the same difference in .22LR and .22 WMR.
That seems to work ok for guns like the Ruger Single Six Convertible.

Anyway, I bought a Ciener kit last month but have yet to try it out.
