looking for CZ527 Varmint opinions and feedback
« on: June 20, 2008, 05:45:16 PM »
i've been doing some thinking on selling my .223 M700 SPS Varmint and going with the CZ527 Varmint instead. the CZ is nicer looking a bit shorter and feels more balanced, plus the set trigger claw extractor and detach mag. what kindo f accuracy can i expect? as it stands my Remington will do 3/4's of an inch or better at 100 yards with handloads. i'm just worried that i would sacrificing a good shooting rifle for one that looks and feels better, but may not shoot as good.  so i want to hear from those that own and shoot them.

OK I have not got nor shot a 527 varmint but have shot the std 527 in 223 and 222. The club owned a 223 as a loaner and someone gave me some Vietnam vintage range pick up ammo, dirty and corroded which I cleaned up and using the std iron sights on the 223 it was easy to keep those that went off in the bull of a Bisley 200 yard target. Later the club got it scoped but I was moving so had left by then. A friend has one in 222 Rem and I have shot that however his reloading needs some improving but I did try some factory through it and it shot well. If I had to time to set it up for me I am confident that it will equal your Remington if not beat it in performance  ;D My Brno 601 in .308 shoots MOA or under and that std, not tweaking of the bedding or floating of the barrel, I only stripped the varnish and oil finshed to wood. and the M Brno Model 2 in .22LR will shoot tiny groups at 25 meters and I mean under 0.4" groups with cheap ammo like Federal AE5022 and CCI Blazer.

 :D hey kevin:
Why not just add the CZ to your collection.  If it doesn't out perform your SPS, then you haven't lost anything.   On the other hand, you'd feel awful giving up that good shooter for something you're not satisfied with.......... 8)

I have the CZ 527 Varmint Kevlar in .204.  It will shoot groups less than .5" @ 100 yards with handloads.  This one did take 50-75 rounds down the barrel before becoming consistant, i have the American and that shot super right out of the box?  Some common issues with the 527 is bolt clearance at the scope eye piece and stiff magazine spring.  I had to go with the high Leopold rings on the new generation Nikon with the bigger eye piece.  I am a Remington fan also but really warming up to the CZ's.  The set trigger is really nice.  I have the main trigger set at 2.25 lbs and the set under a pound with no creep in either.  I also like the HS Precision stock.  The gun for a medium weight varminter just fits and feels right.  I think you will be happy.

My 527 varmit,in walnut shoots very well.Any load will shoot less than 1"and the handloads will shoot 1/4 to 1/2" easily. It a 204 caliber, and its probably the best PD gun I own.(I have lots of them) Mine is also the lightest of all my Varmit rifles, and the set trigger breaks at 16 oz. It seems like the price go's up on them very often.(mine was $410)  Hope this helps .   Digger

:) Uh-oH, if you're like some of us that's been bitten by the CZ bug, that SPS will have to go then !   The fever gets so bad you just can't stand it any longer.

My friend and I both have CZ527's.  Mine is a LUX, and his is a Varmint, and they are sweet.   He set his targets up at 200 yards, and using the set trigger    ;) - - - very nice indeed  ;D

my son and I both got 527's two Christmas's ago.  I can only say one word.....KEEPER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They are varmint with walnut and blued...his has a nicer stock......but they both shoot fantastic.   No recoil, but do make a bit of noise...I suggest ear muff type protection....we have dropped coyotes....jackrabbits, and fox at 200 yards...dead as a hammer.. I will never sell this one....CZ has made a great gun..

I have a 527 American in .17 Remington, and man that little sucker shoots.  With handloads from a rest it can put 5 rounds into a half inch, and that's with my sorry a** pulling the trigger.  :D  It's laid low it's share of coyotes since I got it and I even pulled off one of those "one in a million" shots with it and shot a squirrel through the chest with it at 385 paces.  Haven't tried to pull one of those off again though..... I'm thinking I'll just let that shot become legend and not try a repeat.  ;)

kevin303,  I was kind of biased about buying anything but a Remington or a Browning for a while but I talked to kevthebassman and some of the guys on here and decided to give them a look.  I picked up a few at the local Sportsman's Warehouse and really like the feel and looks of the Varmint Kevlar model so I decided to get one in 223 Rem.  I can tell you right now I am VERY happy with this purchase.  I bought a box of Black Hills remanufactured ammo with a 52gr. BTHP bullet to sight the rifle in with and this rifle will shoot .5" groups all day with this ammo.  I have put together 2 loads so far for this rifle, 1 is the 52gr. Nosler Custom BTHP with a max load of Benchmark and it will shoot 1/4" groups like nobody's business and load #2 is 60gr. Hornady V-max with a max load of Benchmark and it shoots an honest .5" group.  I just got a box of 52gr. A-max bullets today so I'm going to give them a try as well.  This rifle has a 1-9" twist but I haven't tried any of the heavy match bullets yet because the 52grs' are so accurate.  I'm warning you though once you shoot one and get used to the accuracy and the set trigger it's hard to have fun shooting your other rifles.

kev,  I appreciate it brother!!  I'll tell ya, "working out well" is the understatement of the year!  This rifle will flat out shoot the cents of a nickel at 200 yards!!  I can't wait to get the crosshairs on a varmint.
