hydrogen generator
« on: June 21, 2008, 04:47:22 AM »
has anybody here had any experience or used any kind of hydrogen system to increase their mpg? im looking for any info to disscussion boards or forums or plans or just would like to talk to someone who has done it or knows anything about it.the systems ive looked at are claiming a boost of up to 30% increase in mpg.

There are a couple threads on the topic in the Pot Bellied Stove forum.

Have you ever heard of free energy?  Your alternator is powered by your engine which burns gasoline, I remember many different teachers in physics classes telling me that there is no free lunch, till the laws of physics are suspended I ain't buying it. Home electricity might be cheaper but that is VERY unlikely as we would have heard about it on every news show and in every newspaper on the planet. Maybe more power but not less expensive. Man that builds that will make Bill Gates look like a bum in monthes.

no ive never heard of free energy, im just looking for a slight edge in a gas mileage war.i know hydrogen is highly explosive, as is gasoline and propane. all which can be harnessed to run a internal combustion engine.i know i have excess electricity comeing from my alternator, thats why they have built in regulators to stop the flow of juice once batt is fully charged and to keep from overchargeing the batt.if i can make this excess elec produce hydrogen and pipe it into my intake, i should recieve a corresponding boost in mpg.aint saying ive done it or it can be done, just researching to see if it is possible.its actually a rather simple process, whether it costs more than it produces is exactly what im researching.there is a awful lot of people saying it can be done. im not necessarily saying that i believe them but ive seen too much evidence to the contrary to dismiss it alltogether.the man that builds it and advertises it widely and it does work.... will be dead within a month. thats why if i can do it, yull never hear me say it.

Unless I'm mistaken, the alternator will free wheel until you need more electricity. If you do this I would certainly look into a constant duty alternator as yours will most likely fry in a short time. Most alternator shops will warn you to completly charge the battery before you install a new alternator even.  I really hope I'm wrong cause I drive as much as any body around, and I'm not liken gas prices either. But I can't buy the black helicoptor grand conspiracy against fuel efficiency.

Will not work. HUGE amounts of electricity is needed for the conversion, etc. etc. etc!!
Keep 'er tuned, keep an eye on tire pressure, and keep foot out of the gas pedal!
Best you can do!

I beg to differ here.  I have a hydrogen generator in my car and it draws no more than 3 amps.  At the moment, it creates more Hydrogen than I can use in my car due to the cars computer system unrecognizing the H as a lean mixture and adjusting rich at a certain point.  So, consequently, I can only tune my particular vehicle for a 3-4 mpg increase with the added hydrogen.  My plan is to do so more mods and get the most out of the hydrogen.

What about the plug in gadgets that one can buy from Cabela's which is said to electronically retune an engine?

My son used one for his diesel Ford.  He said it made a difference in pulling and performance.

I have an 05 5.7 hemi which when I don't drive Exxon sends me a get well card.  I wonder if the 350+ cost is worth it?

The plug in gadgets are a bit of a different story.  I have one as well on my Dodge diesel and it works well.  What those do for the most part is to reflash another canned program with different fuel and/or timing curves into the onboard computer to increase performance which may or may not compliment the addition of Hydrogen depending on the program.  What really needs to happen is to intercept the O2 sensor signal and "recondition" that signal to think that the mixture is rich then it will react by leaning out the fuel curve and thus use less fuel.  Easy enough to do, and can be done with a simple rheostat, I just haven't done it yet.  Basically the computer is looking for a 0-5v signal and manipulating that will get you there.  If this signal is not modified, there is a limit on the amount hydrogen you can introduce at which point it will become counter productive.

One more thing I'd liek to mention here to folks that may be playing with hydrogen on their vehicles, is to not run hydrogen if you have platinum spark plugs installed as platinum and hydrogen don't play well together (catylists) and damage could result.

Where or what brand do you recommend for purchasing?  Are they more effective on diesels or gas?

I understand you can restore factory settings. Is that correct?

I think our engines are detuned mainly for emmissions which is not for max performance; however, it would seem max performance would mean less emmissions.

Ruskin,

I couldn't tell you what the best brand is, but I can tell you that I have the "Smarty" brand for my Dodge diesel and it works well.  Speaking of gas or diesel and which benefits more from reprogramming, I would have to say diesel.  Much of this is because of the forced induction (turbo) and the being able to increase that pressure.  Yes, most allow you to restore factory settings, I wouldn't buy one that wouldn't.  Most are what they call "VIN Locked" meaning that they will only work on one vehicle at a time.

As far a being detuned, that's probably about right.  The problem is that we have a bunch of lawyers and politicians setting the emissions standards these days and things are a bit out of whack.  Think of an early 90's Geo Metro, those cars achieved upwards of 50 mpg, now think of the modern day Hybrids that can't even get that kind of MPG.  Why? emissions regulations of course.  Although the end result would be that the Geo Metro would in the end burn less fuel and make us less dependent on foreign oil, the Prius gets the nod although in the end it eats more fuel buy which in a given time period belches out more pollutants into the air.  Just like anything else, the gov't got involved and things ain't quite right anymore.

Lazermule, I have an 06 ram Diesel. Will This "smarty" unit mess up my warranty? What about thise units on E-Bay, They Any good?

Note, My Brother in law put a hydrogen generator on his ford truck, he couldn't figure where to hook up the power wire so he put it on a seperate switch. Well he forgot to switch it off one day and when he want to restart it about two hours later it blew the plastic intake off, only cost him about a GRAND have it fixed, I laughed till I cried!!!!!!!!!

I'd be inclined to pass on that unit on ebay if warranty is what you are worried about.  That will require you to tap wires and such that is "physically" changing parts of the truck.  The Smarty simply reprograms you ECM and allows you to back out and replace the stock software for trips back to the dealer without leaving a foot print.  I wouldn't reccommend going back to the dealer with anything other than the OEM program loaded in the ECM.  If they were to reflash your computer which they will often do as updates are available, your Smarty will then be useless and you will be SOL.  So yes, it is very important to return to the stock software b4 returning to the dealer.

On the hydrogen generator, I'm glad to hear that it turned int a funny situation and not a deadly one.  The number one rule is to tie the voltage feed int the ignition circut to prevent what happened to your buddy.  Another good idea would be to go a step further and tie it through a normally open oil pressure switch for added safety.

I am building another hydrogen generator right now for another vehicle I have.  This one will be designed to put out 2-3x the H volume the previous one did.  I will have to intercept some of the voltage feeds to the ECM to make it work correctly and get the most out of it.  My goal is to double the MPG on a vehicle that now gets 20mpg.  May be a stretch, but you have to have a goal.  As long as I can trim fuel (fossil fuel) out and replace it with H and not cause a misfire things should work.  I do need to wait for some warmer weather as I live in a very cold climate and these generator tend to freeze up.  I have some time so I will take my time and do it right.  My last one was more of an experiment, where this one will be more of a thought through design.
