Probably the craziest ?? ever but here goes...........
« on: June 21, 2008, 01:46:29 PM »
I bought a Tikka T3 stainless/synthetic .270 WSM about a year and a half ago. I had bowhunted almost exclusively for about 10 years............so I just got something to get me back into things . Well the gun has pleasantly surprised me with it's accuracy and I have absolutely no complaints .............except I don't really like the way the stock looks ! Now that I am enjoying rifle hunting again..........kinda want something nicer looking but am afraid to take a step backwards since this gun shoots awesome (like center punching targets at 300 yrds awesome). Would be my luck to get a new one that couldn't hit a 5 gallon bucket at 300 yrds !!  :P

So I checked into getting me a Tikka replacement laminated stock..............but they are nearly as much as a new gun . So now I am thinking about buying another T3 laminate/stainless and swapping the stocks and selling the new gun (since it is cheaper to do this than "just" buy a replacement stock)!!

My question is ...................should any caliber work ?? I am assuming since the action is the same for all models............the stocks would all be the same and the recoil lug would sit in the same spot on any. But I do not know for sure . If anyone know's I would appreciate it. I have one buddy that wants one in a .270 wsm so things would go easy............but if he backs out I think a more standard caliber would sell easier !!

I know it's an unorthodox way to get what you want...........but I have a hard time believing I can get a new one that shoots as good as the one I have !!

Thanks !!

You need to understand that the stock is an integral part of the package that is your rifle and therefore and integral part of the accuracy that package delivers. There is no assurance that it will continue to be as accurate as it is now if you replace the stock. It might be or it might be even more accurate but it also might not even be remotely as accurate also. Most likely if you have a barrel that accurate it can be made to perform with the new stock but it might not do so without bedding work.

Thanks Greybeard ! Do you know on a Tikka if I can even swap stocks out................say I buy a .223 or .30-06..........I wonder if the stock/recoil lug location will be the same as my .270wsm !!

I am worried about the change as far as accuracy...........but I will keep my current stock until after I try sighting it in !! I bought a new scope for it anyway............so I will have to re-sight no matter what !! If I can't get it to shoot.............I will go back with my current stock!! Hopefully I can get it to shoot just as good with the new stock as long as they will change out !!

No I do not know. I've never owned a Tikka likely never will. I generally always buy Remington rifles.

The stocks are all the same on mine, 223, 243 and 308. There is a difference for the heavy barrels. I have yet to find anyone who supplies aftermarket stocks and as you say, Beretta prices.... Cheaper to buy another rifle!

You could always send it off and have the stock dipped camo, check out camo-solutions.com and look at some of there work.

McMillan probably makes a stock for it, but the wait is in the neighborhood of 6 months or so. They are awesome stocks and worth the $ and wait IMHO.

I'm pretty sure McMillan does not make an aftermarket stock for T3 Tikkas. Tikka 65 yes, T3 no.

You could be right on that. I know I've seen some Tikkas stocked with McMillans, but they could have been older models.

I hope your Grey Wolf turns out well.
A guy I know bought a SAKO, was quite underwhelmed by it and ended up buying at T3, admitting he should've done so in the first place.
Don't get me wrong, SAKOs are better quality overall and as a rule are exceptionally accurate rifles.
But better quality (and higher price) does not necessarily = better accuracy as many have found to their dismay.
Admittedly the SAKO you are getting is a 75 which is much better than the 85 the guy I know bought but, well, don't kill the golden goose.......  :-\
